Hi @derekeder, I checked with my colleague who has a history with public health data, and he didn't recall a standard. But the point is well taken about using a standardized metric. I recently worked on a application for funding for a federal health clinic, and the application asked us to calculate "Population per physician."
Can we provide both # of physicians (and dentists) and the population per physician and per dentist? Here is 2010 population per community area: http://robparal.com/MetroChicagoHistorical/2010%20Race.htm Let me know if you want me to set up the calculation.
I say "physicians" because you have that data as well as dentists.
Important: the source for this and the physician data is Health Resources and Services Administration http://datawarehouse.hrsa.gov/data/datadownload/pcsa2010Download.aspx

@robparal https://github.com/robparal a few questions on dentist dataset #153 https://github.com/smartchicago/chicago-atlas/issues/153:
- what year or year range do these numbers represent?
- for raw counts like this, we typically adjust for population and present the data as a rate per 1,000 or 100,000 residents. do you think this would be appropriate for this data?
- Chicago Community Oral Health Forum (CCOHF) is the provider - is there a source URL for the data?

The Dental data was originally given to Patrice from CCOHF that referenced another website http://www.cds.org/Clinics/. When @robparal ,@smarziano and I met with CCOHF we informed them that we would be able to display the same dental info from the data scrape @robparal did, similar to the doctor data. There is another set of dental data that will be coming from the UB04 data that @robparal is breaking down for us. So, basically we were calling it CCOHF data only because they were the original partner and contributor.
@kwilliams, A correction: the UBO4 data (hospital discharge data) does not have dentist visit information, if that is what you mean.

Thanks @robparal. I agree not dental visit information, but it does have hospital discharge data by diagnosis codes and some of those codes were dental related. Correct? Or did I just make that up?
@kwilliams: there are dental codes in there, but they are not the same as a dental visit and I don't think we will be using them. We're proposing the categories that are in the spreadsheet I forwarded 4-25-14: these are broad categories of diagnosis and disease: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtvdVdII0XSCdDdINHVYLWxKME5xZ1U0ejA0QTk1YUE&usp=sharing

@robparal Ok, let me take a look and see what we got.
Hello @robparal,
Just wanted to inform you that you are mentioning the wrong kwilliams :smile:
I was worried about that; I was going off of smarziano's style... Me and Github have a ways to go
