CDPH 'Chronic disease' datasets aggregated by zip code #8

Closed derekeder closed 11 years ago

The Diabetes and Asthma chronic disease datasets are aggregated by zip code rather than community area.

Other data will be in zip code aggregation as well, so we can add it to that geography.

Alternative: ask CPDH to release this data rolled up by community area (if possible).

@RoderickJones and @JamyiaClark how are these diabetes and asthma hospitalization datasets different from the data being provided by CHITREC?

If they are redundant, we may want to hold off on importing them. If there's a significant difference, we will want to figure out a way to relate and explain why there are two datasets of seemingly the same information on the site.

CHITREC dataset is a prevalence estimate based on healthcare visits (i.e., among people seeking healthcare at the participating institutions, what % have diabetes). CDPH dataset is a hospitalization rate (i.e., for every 10,000 people residing in a zip code, how many were hospitalized with a primary discharge diagnosis of diabetes in a year). Best option is to make the dataset descriptions more readily available to everyone (users and admins/developers), since these definitions are indeed super important and clarify how things are different. To view CDPH dataset descriptions, including the one I paraphrased above, first navigate to this page then click on the topic area of interest (e.g., diabetes). http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cdph/provdrs/pol_plan_report/svcs/office_of_epidemiologydataanalysisrequests.html The dataset descriptions for each table contain needed context and definitions.

With the portal table open, you can reach it by

  1. Clicking the ABOUT button
  2. Clicking the hyperlink that appears at the bottom of the text under DESCRIPTION.

Alternatively, this is another way to reach it

  1. Click the ABOUT button
  2. Scroll down to ATTACHMENTS

I agree the dataset description is important to include. I also think the titles and brief descriptions will also help differentiate the two sources of data.
