Also I think it would be worthwhile to open a PR to smithy-dafny with exactly these changes, just in the hopes of getting feedback on whether these are reasonable changes to eventually get upstream.

You mean smithy-python, right? I want to do this at some point, but right now I'm overwhelmed with handling the PRs I need to send out to get ESDK-Python MPL integration out the door. Once that's out the door, I'll be more free to open this PR, and will have bandwidth to make any requested changes
