SMPL and the Scrum Master role. #7

I am a certified Scrum Master, what would my role be under SMPL?

Scrum typically gives the scrum master ownership of the "process" and its optimization.

SMPL mandates that a single point of accountability for value flow per model is established. Value flow however, is a shared team responsibility;

All the participants of a SMPL model play a role and have a responsibility to maximize the efficiency of the flow of value from vision to evidence. Furthermore, since SMPL can be scaled down to 1 single individual, in the case of one person working on an idea, the 4 SMPL areas of accountability, in a single player scenario, are then concentrated into that individual.

Individuals are encouraged to step up and adopt an accountability in a SMPL model. Accountabilities cannot be assigned. Accountables can be nominated, but acceptance of the accountability by the nominee(s) is a key part of the establishment of each vision. In other words, a vision without adopting accountables is pointless.

To clarify, SMPL permits for one individual to wear multiple accountability hats so to speak; however, no single accountability or "hat" can be shared by two or more individuals. This is an important ground rule as the accountables in a SMPL model, are encouraged to scale their activities through delegation to others who are proficient at satisfying individual tasks and responsibilities; however, they must do so without compromise to their accountability. This strong relationship that SMPL places on the individuals accepting accountability and the vision itself that they've adopted is a prime example of how the servant leader mentality is organically woven into the SMPL fabric.

Furthermore, those responsible aren't subordinates necessarily to those accountable, but rather understand that the role they're playing is a supporting role. Organizations are free to make the relationship between those accountable and those who accept individual responsibilities in whichever way they choose to implement their initial hierarchy. The most important part is to adapt this relationship over time and as soon as the evidence demonstrates necessary or possible,

Finally, the individual accountable for value flow could possess knowledge in disciplines like Scrum Master role or the principles of lean for example but the point of taking accountability for value flow is to encourage the participants of a model to remain true to the core essence of SMPL - adapting to changes - over enforcing a particular recipe, process or framework. To adapt, the accountables, value flow individual included, need to be more in tune with the business, the vision(s) and the ingredients for producing sustained outcomes in the environment in which they operate versus understanding and mastering Scrum or similar frameworks.
