I have this same issue :( Is there a way we can get default strings added as a
package to the installer? This would help all the people experiencing this
issue
alot.. Thanks!

I can't even revert to the original strings! I tried editing my own
SpringBoard.strings file, then I downloaded
an untouched version and overwrote the bad file. nothing worked! my iPhone's
still looking pretty clunky :(

Actually that technique worked great for me! I had to reboot though. At the
same time
I remove the backup file too, so perhaps that was your issue.

I'll give that a shot... where's the backup located? and do we know if the
strings need to be the same
number of characters when they're changed?

In my case there was a file called:
/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/English.lproj/SpringBoard.strings.b
u
I simply removed that, then copied my virgin
/System/Library/CoreServices/SpringBoard.app/English.lproj/SpringBoard.strings
over top of the existing one and rebooted. That's all it took for me :) Good
luck!

Is the "Revert to Backup" not working?!

I think it's deleting the content of the backup file. when it loses the strings
the only option is revert to
backup, but it doesn't do anything. I deleted the .bu file and threw a fresh
SpringBoard.strings file on, now
everything is working great.

Can someone attach the original (virgin) SpringBoard.strings file so I can
overwrite
mine?

here you are, make sure to delete your SpringBoard.strings.bu as well, or it
will do nothing

I am having the same problem but am using 1.1.1 firmware.
Will this same download work for me?
Also, where would I have to delete the "bad" file from?
Thanks

the same file SHOULD work (unless more strings have been added since 1.1.1)
you need to delete
SpringBoard.strings.bu and replace SpringBoard.Strings that you currently have
and replace it with the
above file

This problem started for me when I followed some poor instructions online about
how
to use WinSCP to SSH into my iphone and make changes to the text, so that I
could
change "slide to unlock" into some custom msg. What happened is that the
person who
left the instructions failed to mention that you cannot simply open it in
notepad
without altering the format of the file.
It's partly my fault for not making a backup.
For the record, I this file DOES work and I'm using Apple iPhone 3GS 3.1.3
untethered
w/ Spirit. HOWEVER, as Aki.Kyozoku said "(unless more strings have been added
since
1.1.1", there ARE more strings that have been added. And while it did fix the
main
ones like, unlock, power off, etc there are a few like "Search Place Holder" and
others that are new.
Ultimately the fix will be for somebody to post an unbastardized
Springboard.strings
file for every OS version. Good luck in your fixing and if you DO have 3.1.3
(or even
3.1.2 or something close) please share your bu files with the rest of us.
