Feature: Generate Data Query templates #167

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
As part of some work we did at PalominoDB, we enhanced make-template.pl to
create Data Query templates (including their associated resource xml files).

Attached, find a tarball with the patch, and an example template.

Please let us know if there's any style or functional changes necessary for
inclusion.

Thank you! You are very brave, trying to understand data queries. I found
them maddening. I have read the patch and part of the PHP files but I'm short
on time right now. BTW, if there is some short documentation synopsis you can
contribute, that would be great. Otherwise I imagine I will get requests I'm
not sure how to answer.

I'm glad you like patch :)
Yes, data queries are difficult. It took me a solid couple of days to learn how
to use them when I first encountered cacti. IMO, they should have been
simplified and extended and then all of cacti based around them instead of this
"split-brain" sort of behavior that currently exists. Oh well.

Yes, I can provide documentation. It was on my "TODO" list before the holidays
struck. I'll see if I can't get something attached in a week or two.

Ok, I've done some docs. They're not exhaustive, but, should provide a good
starting place for you or anyone else. They're in wiki format, so, it should be
possible to just add that page in and go.

This would be perfect for graphing stuff like Disk IO on a host that has
multiple hard drives installed. Glad to see someone working on integrating it.
:)
