FAT Problem #23

Please fill out the following information:

Problem Disc:
--------------------------------------------------
Disc Region:
Wii Region: USA
cIOS Version: Rev07

Which SoftChip revision are you using?
--------------------------------------------------

R62

Please describe the issue you're having
--------------------------------------------------

Configuration cannot be stored on my SD card/ garbage is written.

Please provide any additional information below.
--------------------------------------------------

The following is written to my SD card as soon as I launch softchip :
B5662343D78AD6Dù

My SD card is 128 megs regular SD card. I have tried reformating it to FAT
again (It was already FAT but who knows) to no avail. The directory
Structure and file names are written correctly but the content of
default.cfg is garbage. If I try to change a setting while my SD with that
garbage is in the drive the wii freezes up. This is annoying because I have
to either set IOS everytime or compile softchip with a new default (I'd
like not to..). Anyone knows why the config file is not stored correctly?

Little update, I don't think it changes anything but it's a miniSD in an SD
adapter.
I've also recompiled a version where the default IOS is 249 for now to be able
to use
it but I'm really curious to know if anyone knows what my bug is and if it's
fixable...

First, this is not garbage. Our configuration file is exactly like that, a
binary
structure, nothing readable. Don't change it with a text editor like notepad...

Can you describe your freezing problem?

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Yes sorry for thinking it was garbage I thought it was relevent to write the
config
in plain text. I should have verified Hexadecimally, my bad.

The freeze happens at different places, if I launch softchip with no config
file
saved and my SD card inserted it boots correctly to the config menu. At that
point,
if I chose my favorite IOS it freezes (I have tried waiting 3 minutes and
nothing
happens, also good to know that the wiimote gets unasigned).

At that moment, if I reboot my wii and open softchip it will stay on a black
screen
and do nothing (frozen). If I remove my SD card softchip launches correctly and
if I
select an IOS it loads it without any problems (Which is why I blamed the
config
file).

So the initial write always works (Well doesn't freeze my wii anyways) but
writing
the IOS change info or reading from it seems to lock up my wii..

Are you sure that you are using r62? It's not a write problem I think, because
it
saves when you enter IOS menu... I'll see what I can do.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Yes, I made sure my depo is updated in SVN and also the IOS 0 bug I had in R61
is not
present anymore leading me to believe I am indeed on R62.

Rapidly searching through boards I couldn't find other people with this issue,
maybe
it's an isolated case.. So the problem would come simply from the fact that
there is
something in my SD slot and the IOS has a problem loading because of that?

I know I had gamecube controllers plugged in, I don't think it changes anything
but
I'm gonna try unplugging them and retry as soon as I get home from work.

Try r64, removed unneeded stuff in FAT.

Does always selection of the same IOS cause a freeze, or do all IOS cause a
freeze?
Does it freeze even if no gamecube and usb hardware is connected?

I will try tonight using R64 and all superfluous hardware unconnected.
Thanks for the support.

Hi helllfwnix, ive got the same error too, tried different things like copying
the
dol in apps but no use, when i restart my wii, after changing the ios to 249 and
saving it, it loads one game and then it doesnt boot up at all...

Tried to load a game again , this time i unplugged all usb attachments, now
suddenly
the softchiploader is back in its original state and works fine, still doesnt
save
the chosen iso to the sd card, everytime i reset my wii the same iso36 comes
back again..

Papa1, were you using R64 when you did these tests? Luccax removed a seemingly
useless FAT unmount, maybe this will help fix our problems.

I'll be home to test some more in 2 hours.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
Yes i used the r64 softchip, did some testing and indeed when i plug in my
battery
charger and my microphone usb then the softchip doesnt start anymore. Either
way it
never keeps my configuration when i change to ios249.

Alright here is my report:

With R62: When starting softchip with no configuration file Softchip would
freeze
upon chosing an IOS and the screen would stay at the IOS chosing part. Upon
relaunching Softchip, if the SD card was in the drive softchip would stay at a
black
screen.

With R64: When starting softchip with no configuration file Softchip still
freezes
upon chosing an IOS but this time the screen is cleared before and "Loading
configuration file" is showed at the top. This is probably only because of the
new
console code. HOWEVER, using R64 if I try to reopen Softchip after, it opens
seemingly without any problem. It says IOS36 loaded without saying "Using
default
configuration" probably indicating that it was able to load the default config
file
from the SD card.

Sadly, IOS 249 still freezes if I try to load it. So I decided to try what
Nintendo @
Kaffee suggested and I deleted my config file, reopened softchip and then
loaded
IOS30. It did not freeze! So it seems my problem is loading IOS249 while there
is a
SD card in the slot..

Note: I have tried with or without GC controllers for all tests and it didn't
change
anything.

Thank you for your testing. Which IOS do you have at IOS249? WiiGator's or
Waninkoko's? It seems like there are 2 problems or more, i will do some testing
with
usb hardware too.

My IOS 249 is Waninkoko's IOS36Rev07.

I did a few tests at my wii. Now my config is messed up too, it writes a
correct file
when no config was present before, but it does not save any changes to it.

@Luccax: "if (fp == NULL)" is true when the loader tries to overwrite the
settings.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
The configuration file issue should be solved with r65, if this problem still
exists,
lease tell.

If your SoftChip r65 still crashes when you try to select Waninkoko's IOS, or it
crashes when usb hardware is plugged in, please add new issues for this.

PS: Sorry, i did something wrong, r65 is not at the update site, but you can
download it.

With r64 I also had the freeze at IOS change, and after that at every boot
unless I
had no SD in my Wii (default settings). With r65 the IOS change works, so it
doesn't
freeze there anymore. However, it freezes after the wiimote warning screen with
any
game I try and also disconnects the wiimote.
After rebooting the Wii, softchip freezes right away just like with r64. So to
summarize, the only freeze fixed for my is the IOS change freeze.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
lafies, which IOS do you use? Does WiiGator's loader work, or does his loader
freeze too?

Try r66.

Original comment by luccax@gmail.com on 3 Dec 2008 at 8:44

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
R66 did not fix any of my problems.

I now have two problems :

1 - If I have a configuration saved on my SD card and I boot up softchip it
stays on
a black screen. (It opened in R64)

2 - I can't seem to be able to load any IOS that exists. If I point it to any
IOS
that doesn't exists it gives me an error but if I try to load IOS30 or IOS249
it
locks up. It seems I can only load an IOS when it's the first one loaded by
SoftChip
(I verified this by changing the default IOS loaded in softchip by IOS249 and
it
works perfectly).

I have all same problem with Hellfenix, here is my feedback at Gbatemp.
Here is what i did & met:
1,Copy r66 boot.dol to /SD/App/SoftChip/
2,Run it from HBC
3,Change the cIOS to 249 & press A, then the game works fine.
4,Press home button in game, then restart the wii.
5,Run r66 again & I got a black screen, wiimote no response, no LED light up.
6,Delete the /SD/SoftChip/Default.cfg
7,Run r66, no black screen & the IOS backed to 36.
9,Change any setting like silent mode & press A, system freezed, lost contact
with
wiimote, must restart wii with long-press power button.
i m not sure about 9, maybe its a radom freeze...
Thanks.

.
.
.
1, I`m using Waninkoko`s cIOS36 rev7 released with gamma. Because i heard
WiiGaator`s is the lite version so i seached an installed Waninkokos version.
Gamma
& SoftChip before r61 worked fine.
2, No usb device or GC memory card in.
3, I have a normal 2GB MicroSD card with a adapter. Other HBC app such as
FTPii,SD
explorer read/write work fine.
Best Regards.

Do you have a SoftChip.log file in the root of your sd card? Does it work, if
you
remove this file, it's useless anyway, it was created by an old revison. If this
works, lease tell.

There is no such file on my SD card, in fact, I have formatted it a few times
to make
sure nothing was on there.

I'm sorry i have no idea what your problem could be, if reinstalling the cIOS
and the
.dol i compiled don't work, i can't help you.
My R66 dol(inofficial release just for testing purposes for Hellfenix):

I had the same problem: After starting softchip R66 screen went black, wiimote
lights
are off and Wii has to be reseted. Problem was NOT solved by removing file
SoftChip.log in root directory of my SD card (2GB, Panasonic, FAT formated)
since
problem happened again (after one successfull start after removing this file).
With R66 from comment 25 there was no problem but with my self-compiled R66
problem
was always visible. Then I followed the instructions on
http://wiki.softchip-mod.com/index.php/Windows_Build_Guide to updated to newer
versions of lobogc and libfat. Afterwards I recompiled and now the problem
seems to
be gone.

Well, I'll be damned, nintedo@kaffee's version works like a charm. I'm gonna
update
libogc and libfat and see if it helps, thanks nintendo and girotti!

Confirmed, you have to compile using latest libogc and libfat (from GIT).
