Needs to be merged into the 1.0 branch so existing snaps will use it. It is completely backwards compatible so it should not break any existing snaps.

@diddledan can you approve this too?

Maybe next time, I'll create both pull requests at the same time. That might be the best approach going forward, then reviewers can approve both PR's at the same time.
