it's supposedly mostly (but not completely?) ostatus compatible:

Diaspora isn't compatible to OStatus. The only thing that it supports is some RSS feed for the posts of a user.

Here's some relevant documentation on the federation protocol diaspora uses. It seems fairly proprietary though it does use h-cards https://diaspora.github.io/diaspora_federation/index.html
