annotation retrieval too slow

1. There seems to be trouble accessing data/annotations on the portal.
(dataset I521_A0008_D001). There are about 15000 global annotations
and getting 100 at a time takes quite a while (10 mins or so?).
Specifying a particular channel will decrease that time, but in the
end the annotations returned are identical. My question is:  why is it
taking so long to get the annotations? It seems it is just text and
has no actual data.

2. As the dataset is being used for a course, server load may be an
issue (the situation above occurred yesterday but did not occur over
the weekend). Often a gateway timeout error occurs. Is there a way to
check if server load is the main issue or if something else is going
on?
