Localizing strings to resource files for translators #225

Open bonimy opened 7 years ago

bonimy commented 7 years ago

Issue

All of the strings in snes9x are hardcoded. This of course can be a nightmare for translators, or even for anyone looking to do some text quality control.

This issue is a generalization of #38 but, IMO, distinct enough to be a separate issue.

Resolution

Put all of the strings into localizable resource files. This may be a windows-only feature. I know the API call to extract a string from a resource is windows-specific. So this resolution may only be applicable to windows-specific code files and strings. If so, it still may be worth the effort.

Does anyone know much about string localization in other operating systems?

Tell me is a nightmare, at least on the es.po for the gtk I was forced to try and error the string names and add them manually.

I think that if we could unharcode the strings then we can reuse the already existent po files for translation. I'm willing to add a translation spanish for windows too if the strings get unharcoded (and all unify so Windows and Gtk reuse the same po file, which also mean check why some gtk strings not show correctly on most linux pot editors)

I think I've got the string pull fixed. I removed intltool, which wasn't finding the new strings any more. Now, if you build snes9x (gtk) from source and run make update-po in the po directory, it will merge all the new strings into the .po files.
