Inconsistent unread message badge on homescreen

Describe the bug The notification count badge on the homescreen often doesn't reflect the correct number of unread messages in the app.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Open the app, make sure there are no unread messages/conversations
2. Go to the homescreen, observe that there is no notification badge on the Snikket app icon (:+1:)
3. From another contact, send a message to the device. Observe the notification pop-up, but the badge does not appear on the app icon (:-1:)
4. Open the app, and reply to the message
5. Return to the homescreen
6. Observe that there is now an indicator badge of '1', even though all messages are read (:-1:)
