Sorry it's not working for you. I'm going to close this. It looks like you'll have to use Vagrant to hack on Snowdrift.
@razvan-panda did you try stack upgrade --git
(to get the latest stack), make sure it's in your path (see https://github.com/commercialhaskell/stack/issues/237#issuecomment-126793301 ), stack clean
and then the full latest build process? We updated the dependencies more recently.
If you have errors still using the latest stuff all clean, then, yeah, it's just not something others are going to take time for. Nobody else cares about Windows, certainly it's not going to help us get launched at this time unless we had lots of Windows-insistent volunteers (which is basically never going to happen).
But I still would rather it work vs not…
I will give another try at fixing the Windows build as soon as I can. Snoyberg replied so I should have enough information to fix it.
I want to say that as a group I really appreciate the help you gave me and other people who wished to contribute to the project.
But there are also things which I really do not appreciate and think that are hurting Snowdrift and its goals.
I am talking about omniscient attitudes like Nobody else cares about Windows
.
Or what you last wrote to me in closed source
format (private message on IRC):
<wolftune> just a brief note: I hope you recognize that supporting Windows is problematic because (A) Windows is not Free/Libre/Open so works against our goals (B) is a lousy system that has one benefit: it's substantial userbase which also means a large market and thus lots of programs made for it
<wolftune> I'd prefer things to work, but please blame Windows for the problems and accept that other people can loe patience with trying to deal with Windows
<wolftune> loe -> lose
Emphasys on: is a lousy system that has one benefit: it's substantial userbase which also means a large market and thus lots of programs made for it
Besides the fact that you said thing that are obviously wrong, you were also rude about it.
I am not sure I want to continue working with people who might put me and others in situations like this in the future.
And also not sure I would want to recommend Snowdrift to other people because of attitudes like this. Currently we started a Haskell group in Dublin and quite a few people came for the first meetup. Some of them asked if there are any Haskell projects I would recommend them to contribute to. I said to them that Snowdrift is a great project with a great cause and a team who is really helpful to newcomers. Unfortunately the team is... little bit stuck up about Windows and its importance, and being rude about it.
Well, I'm glad we all agree on the mission, even if don't always agree with our individual statements and viewpoints.
Good luck getting builds on Windows. You're stress-testing both our build process and the stack tool, which is very helpful to the two projects. Hopefully soon this will all be squared away, and development on the site will continue to accelerate.
@razvan-panda I hope you can be gracious here and recognize that we work to absolutely be a welcoming, non-rude project and community. We go out of our way for those things. I also never have called you names or said anything directly rude to you personally. I appreciate your involvement, want things to succeed, and have gone out of my way to mediate when people have criticized your defense of Windows. Let me be clear: it is valid and appropriate for you to complain and ask me to improve when you feel something I've said isn't fully respectful.
Now, while it would be ideal to never even slip a little into saying anything judgmental, I think an objective view of our discussions would show that you have regularly said far more judgmental and hyperbolic things about the workability of Haskell's development tools than I have ever said about Windows. I called Windows "lousy" this one time, but mostly have refrained from such judgments. You've regularly complained in ways were not helpful or productive (because there's nothing we can do about it) about how unacceptable it is to you to have to just work with Vim or Emacs instead of a proper IDE you want. This isn't about blaming or shaming you or anything, but please just recognize that the level of complaining that you've done about this situation which none of us can control and where we try to be as helpful as we can… well, let me just put it this way: you should understand what it means to be human and not always express things perfectly. It's really not fair or warranted for you to jump to threatening to stop suggesting people help us just because I express once or twice something somewhat emotional about disliking Windows. Quite simply, as a matter of personality and overall community, we are not "stuck up" — that is not a fair characterization. We are as friendly and welcoming and respectful as basically any project can realistically be, and we respond graciously to complaints even, work to improve, and we'll continue to do so.
Thanks for your persistence and help with getting these technical frustrations fixed! :)
@razvan-panda oh, one more thought to clarify: here's what I think would be a fair way to characterize us: "Being advocates for software freedom, they don't like Windows". The problem with "stuck up" besides being emotional and unfair (and inaccurate) is that it makes it sound like we're just anti-Windows just because we're tribalist, like Apple fanboys or something. We have legitimate and serious complaints about Windows, and if someone wanted to join the community, they should understand that we have a political view that is about promoting software freedom and privacy (lots to legitimately complain about in Windows 10!), so we promote GNU/Linux over Windows. It's perfectly fine to tell people that. Given that understanding, it's notable that we are willing to support Windows (thanks to your help).

@razvan-panda, you really need to quit interpreting technical opinions as personal attacks. I happen to agree with @wolftune, and I don't see how he's "obviously wrong". If you have some legitimate arguments, we'd all be happy to hear them. Being offended doesn't automatically make you right.
But there are also things which I really do not appreciate and think that are hurting Snowdrift and its goals.

.
That's not so much an attitude as a fact. You are the only Snowdrift dev (that I know of) that uses Windows. The rest of us use Linux or BSD, and therefore only really care if Snowdrift works on Linux and BSD.
Unfortunately the team is... little bit stuck up about Windows and its importance, and being rude about it.
How I view the issue:
Peter Harpending
@pharpend While much of what you just wrote makes sense, I'm not sure that if I read it from perspective of @razvan-panda that it will clearly go over well.
@razvan-panda I really do mean what I said in part of that quote you gave: please have a little graciousness in recognizing Windows' faults. I.e. some of the technical challenges and hassle with getting this working should be blamed on Windows. So this is not a personal attack on you, but don't think the situation is the fault of Haskell or Snowdrift people. Consider the way that productive exchanges go where we can all understand each other well: I've basically never heard you say "yeah, I know this aspect of Windows is annoying" or "sorry, it's Windows having problems again". In other words, sure, we want the issues solved, and we all want to be respectful between all the people involved, but Windows does have aspects about it that are objectionable. And I've never said anything over-the-top about it. I think all of us would appreciate hearing from you that you acknowledge that people have legitimate complaints about Windows. That doesn't mean every judgment is fair or fairly worded, but we'd not be talking with each other at all if I got defensive over the level of hyperbolic things you've said about various tools. Allow me some minor room to state my dislike of Windows. I wasn't that pushy about it, I've mostly only been friendly and helpful.
Let me verify that this doesn't break Linux builds.
