Occasional crashes of Microsoft Teams with MacType running #702

Open HelgeBoehme opened 3 years ago

HelgeBoehme commented 3 years ago

Hello, I noticed some crashes starting up Microsoft Teams while MacType version 2019.1 is running and active. The crashes still occur if I put Teams.exe into exclude or unload list, it is required to disable MacType to get Teams running (after startup I can re-enable MacType). I'm using MacType with MacTray (Teams crashes in both: standalone or compatibility mode), registry or service mode not tested. Currently I have nothing further than the error dialog. Sometimes, no error appears but Teams is not working correctly (not logging-in into the account and no window). Best Regards, Helge 2020-11-24 13_53_08-Clipboard

Maybe the same problem as https://github.com/snowie2000/mactype/issues/716

sammilucia commented 3 years ago

thanks for linking issues!

I agree I think these problems are related. I'm having them too, and the problem goes away if I uninstall BitDefender. can I ask what anti-malware you're using if any?

Hello @sammilucia,

I agree I think these problems are related. I'm having them too, and the problem goes away if I uninstall BitDefender. can I ask what anti-malware you're using if any?

It's a company laptop, so I cannot disable or configure the Windows Defender, which is always active.

let's see what @snowie2000 says.

@HelgeBoehme what antivirus/anti-malware is on the computer?

@sammilucia

Windows Defender

sammilucia commented 3 years ago

well okay then, basically nothing... is there any anti-malware software on the computer?

MacType shouldn't be causing this, there are no reported issues that I'm aware of.. it is a known issue with some antivirus products, but not MacType (again, I've not seen it).

being that it's a company laptop, can you please let the IT team know you are having problems with MS Teams and they should be able to fix it for you.

FYI, generally the first steps they should do are:

  1. ensure Windows is 100% up to date
  2. ensure there is a known good backup
  3. from an elevated command prompt run: DISM /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
  4. then run also (from an elevated command prompt) sfc /scannow
  5. reboot Windows and test

I'm not going into full diagnostic and repair steps as your IT team should do that.

please let me know how you go with this. if there is an issue with MacType then we of course we want to know about it... however as I say, MacType is a stable product, this is not a known problem, so it remains to be proven as the root cause.

Hello @sammilucia , been there, done that. They gave me very similar steps to do and check. Later, I figured out that I can start Teams with MacType disabled. Then our IT team was out because MacType is no official application on company laptops and not required for work.

wdyt @snowie2000 ?

Change your mactype work mode to Service Mode instead of using Registry Mode. That will be normal.

@rpzone I have used tray mode. Is there somewhere documented, what's the difference?

sammilucia commented 3 years ago

@HelgeBoehme there's some information here https://github.com/snowie2000/mactype/wiki/Secure-Boot and in the Wizard UI

you'll want to use Tray Mode with administrator privileges, or Service Mode

I used Tray Mode as administrator started by Windows task scheduler. Currently I'm not using MacType as it causes too much maintenance for me, so I cannot test it now.
