There are ontologies such as http://www.productontology.org/ (and perhaps others), which seem like a good fit for a project like this (and are/were used for product search as well). Then the search could be a rather generic one through their properties.
Not sure if there are readily available suitable ones though (with all the needed properties defined), but perhaps worth checking and/or extending them.
