Optional exercises in the homework #56

I noticed that some of the homework questions have "optional" in the title, such as "(\ *** Problem #17 (10 pts) : 2 stars, optional (practice) )". Are these exercises truly optional? Or was the wording accidentally left in when the problems were copied from the textbook?
