I've run into a bug coding up the label map code in "src". I searched for the error message and found this thread:

This appears to be a problem that a lot of people are having right now. Cartopy is sort of broken right now?!

None of these fixed have worked yet:

I look forward to the day where plotting isn't such a headache.

Somewhat ashamed to say that I still largely use basemap.

This has been fixed! The solution was to switch to this Docker image: pangeo/pangeo-notebook:2021.09.08. Thanks to Willi Rath for the suggestion.
