Repeater cannot read metabox group from a settings page

The repeater field cannot read values from a metabox group that is created on an options page. The group can be selected as the repeater field, but nothing is ever returned:

• create an option page with metabox
• add custom fields to the options page (FAQ group field that is cloneable, with 'Question' and 'Answer' text sub-fields
• add some FAQs to the group
• create a global block to display these fields
• add a repeater element to a page. target the FAQ group with the global block. Nothing is returned.
