This is a good idea. You'd have to search the output transport lines for any other connected entities. I haven't messed with transport line API before so I don't know how hard it would be. If someone implements it before me, pull requests are welcome!
The belt removal feature is live in version 0.4.0! The belt feature must be enabled in the settings before it takes effect. It might do strange things because there's lots of edge cases and I haven't tested all of them. Post screenshots if you find a situation where it does something unexpected!
Would be cool if this mod could also deconstruct no longer needed belts
