O'Reilly's Safari Online Books Access through St. Catharines Public Library #56

Open fifteen3 opened 10 years ago

fifteen3 commented 10 years ago

How does the idea of being a St. Catharines Public Library card holder make you feel?

Not with me?

Well what if the St. Catharines Public Library card gave you access to the O'Reilly catalogue of books?

After speaking with the StCPL they informed me that the best course of action to get the Library working on the integration is get a large group of people to bring it to their attention.

I was even given an email address for people to email requests to:

admin@stcatharines.library.on.ca

also there is this service called twitter and they have an account: @stcathlibrary

Think about the children and all the code they could be writing.

Comments, suggestions and questions are welcome.

@trevortwining suggested in IRC that we promote a petition at all of the upcoming Software Niagara events. I like that idea.

I also like the idea of creating new hashtag to tweet petition them.

Access to the O'Reilly catalogue would be awesome. Should I go ahead and tweet or would you like me to wait until we decide on a hashtag?

fifteen3 commented 10 years ago

I sent a request to get more info on pricing as I want to have a good idea how much it will cost so that we can realistically make this happen.

But what the hell tweeting can't hurt.

knicklabs commented 10 years ago

This is great. I think we should see what we can pull off with a bit of a coordinated effort. Create a hastag and a form letter people can send. We can try calling on some local businesses directly for support.

Check out what TPL has http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/detail.jsp?R=EDB0099

Just e-mailed Safari Books Online on budgetary pricing for Libraries maybe to even to publicly propose the offering. I’ve been using their service for more than 5 years and love it. Sure beats buying books.

A lady from ProQuest responded to my Safari Books Online email. She said she can only deal with libraries directly. So we won't have any idea what kind of pricing is available.

So it is fair to say we can start sending emails and tweets to the library asking for them to look into setting up the service for st. catharines library members.

suggestions for hashtags are:

safaribooks

stclibsafaribooks

Other suggestions are welcome.

Carlo,

I got the same response from the same representative. I’m going to call her and ask her for ballpark numbers.

I’ll also ask a couple contacts at the city on how best approach the scenario.

sweet anything we can do to make it happen.

trevortwining commented 10 years ago

I got the same answer, and a specific person at the Library (John Dunn).

I’ll draft a petition today and post it up to GH.

TT

Here’s the body of the message

Hello Trevor,

I've been in touch with John Dunn at St. Catharines Public Library. They are not interested in Safari at this time.(emphasis mine) Our policy is to provide pricing directly to the library so I'm unable to provide you with pricing at this time.

If you contact the library, they can request this information on your behalf.

I can't remember the name of the guy I spoke to at the library. His name could have been John Dunn.

Anyway the instructions I got were if this is something that people want the library Board and buying committee will review it. The larger the public demand the greater the chances of this happening.

lordspace commented 10 years ago

What if torontopubliclibrary can tell that info?
