I thought about this over night. I think there needs to be 3 parameters that are assessed. 1,) how much is this research (is it pure research or the grey areas around it) 2,) how much does this require specialist computer technology knowledge (software, hardware etc) 3,) how much does this involve writing software
This would allow better identification of RSE roles as well as capturing the ecosystem around an RSE. It is a key principal of the research's concordat of research staff being equipped and supported and this may give you an idea indication of that.
I think there should be 2 parameters collected. The first for a role that is mainly research computing and the second for software development. 1,) Some IT services roles will require some software development but no research. 2,) Also some research computing management roles have no software development but are concerned with making research software development easier. 3,) hardware and software are very much interelated matters especially with the internet of things and hpc
