You're right. I have no idea of when we can do that though.
Hello all,
Beside the graphics, most of the music and the game name are also non-free.
Hi, I wondered whether you know LPC, that stands Liberated Pixel Cup, a challenge that was brought by Open game art http://opengameart.org http://lpc.opengameart.org/
This conducted to create art that is following the 45° view most 2D RPG are using, including Zelda for certain things and enormous amount of compatible art has been made.
Makrohn even made a common repo for this, gathering all the art he could: https://github.com/makrohn/Universal-LPC-spritesheet
And he (among others) used this art in two games: LPC (Laurelia's Polymorphable Citizen) : https://github.com/makrohn/polymorphable Concordia https://github.com/makrohn/concordia
(Have a look at the images in the tiled/ folder)
Also, art is gathered in this open game art's collection (among others): http://opengameart.org/content/liberated-pixel-cup-0
Maybe this can help to turn/create a new zelda with free graphics?
Hi again, Open game art can also be used to get free music and sounds.
Hi, Thanks for these links. I don't have time to do it myself for now, but if someone wants to try to make an alternative version of zsdx with such graphics, I will be glad to help.
Hi @christopho :)
Have you got some reference about which file is free/libre and which one isn't? If you can do that, I'd be more happy to try, trigger and follow help from the OGA community about this. Also, I bet some Nintendo naming and references shall be changed for the sake of freedom. ;)
Best regards,
Ok, I will make a precise list of what belongs to Nintendo in zsdx and what does not.
@christopho Thanks a lot!! :D I'll be more than happy to start the effort and help you bring a free zelda like to the open source community \o/
Free graphics would be absolutely awesome! Thanks a lot for your help!
Excellent!!
Based on your list, I'll create a check list, to follow the files being replaced. I guess I'll start by forking zsdx if you don't mind. :)
I'll warn then everyone on OGA and Free Game dev.
Is it sufficient if I push files equivalent in my zsdx fork?
Ok, let's do that! Can you give me the push access to your future fork? Because I want to help :) By the way, we will need a name for your fork, so we have to choose a title for the game (even a temporary one). "Children of Solarus"? "Solarus Adventures"? I like "Children of Solarus", at least for a temporary title, because it corresponds to the story. Or a name without solarus since solarus is also the name of the engine? "[Insert the name of the hero]'s Adventures"? Or something like The Legend of Zenna? :)
The game is yours so you name it, I also like Children of Solarus and the fact of keeping Solarus doesn't hurt at all, since it's the first game using the solarus engine after all.
Zenna, eh eh. I guess indeed there will be some renaming in the characters names. ;)
Ok,
I'm preparing the exact list, and will then be in the process of creating an example of conversion that I will show in the help request. That will help me know what I'm talking about and show people an actual piece of work done.
I'll tell you more once I've done at least a draft of this.
@christopho
Ok, I've added you as a collaborator (I guess at some point, I should transfer ownership of this repo back to you, btw.) See the issues there. I've hinted you there so get aware of new comments.
Closing the bug since there is now https://github.com/Bertram25/ChildenOfSolarus/issues/6.
Hello,
this game is very interesting, but unfortunately, the used pixarts is not free enough to officially package the game in Debian and other distributions.
I know you guys are aware of this issue, but I'm opening this bug be kept posted about your progress toward this difficult but important task.
Thanks for your work Mt
