This very much WIP and I don't really know what I'm doing as I can't test systematically :-/

Please test and report breakages, I'll try to fix them

@nickray @kms15 Could you have a look at that mess - and pick up from here? I'll try to clean a bit ... but hope it motivates you to finally fix it ;-)

Great, I pushed it to Debian now as well - let's hope we can iron out the bugs and have some proper testing this way.
