Openbox themes #75

I use these themes, but my primary window manager is Openbox. I created a
tentative set of themes for match Shiki and Dark colors themes:

These are GPL so you are free to include them. Also, I am open to any
suggestions for improving them.

That's a great idea. It would do great to add support for Openbox, in order to 
not
alienate anyone and provide better DE coverage. I just have a few questions, 
since
I've never ventured any lighter than XFCE...

1. Do the current GTK themes work properly in Openbox? (meaning, is it only the
window borders that are missing?)
2. Can you recommend an ubuntu-based Openbox LiveCD for me to easily test all 
this in
Virtualbox?

As for the window borders themselves, I think the square look you offer looks 
better
in Openbox than the metacity/xfwm that have rounded corners at the top... But 
for
consistency with the current themes, I think perhaps removing the color 
gradient at
the top and adding a 1px gray outline (like in the current metacities) or a 
colored
3px stripe (like in the striped metacity) would suit best the dark background. 
If I
get the hang of openbox theming, perhaps I can make the minor changes myself, 
but if
not, I may ask for a bit of help!

Ah, I forgot to ask something... Would the openbox window borders support being
installed as a folder in "/themes/Shiki-Colors Metacity/"? I had some issues 
with
GNOME's appearance preferences freaking out when I added the XFWM's, so 
apparently I
can only add window borders for other DE's by including them to the Metacities'
folders... In XFCE it sees the window borders alright, but I'm not sure about 
openbox.

3. Currently, it is only possible to have square Openbox themes, and Openbox 
does not
support any kind of pixmap (other than the buttons) for themes. So it isn't 
possible
to make a very close replica of the original metacity themes (However, Fluxbox 
themes
are pixmapped, so someone could make a pretty accurate FB theme, but not me- 
I've
never used it or made themes for it). The Openbox theme documentation is here:

I used a split vertical gradient for the active window titlebar. The top half 
of the
titlebar splits from blue (or what have you) to gray, and the bottom half of the
titlebar just splits from that gray to the same gray so it looks like a solid.
Basically, this is as close as I could get to the original themes. 

It would be a possibility to just remove the colors from the title bar and have 
a
smooth gray gradient that would blend in with the menubar of the windows.

4. Openbox themes have to be in /themes/*theme name*/openbox-3/themerc

The metacities don't use any kind of pixmaps (other than buttons), and I like 
your
square look, so perhaps that isn't an issue. Like you said, a smooth gray 
gradient
and a 1px highlight line at the top (with the added pixmap buttons if necessary)
would look just the same as the metacities.

Thanks for the links, I'll download crunchbang and see how it works out.

I don't really know about metacity themes, but I would imagine that metacity is 
a lot
more versatile in drawing window decorations than openbox, even though your 
themes
don't use pixmaps.

In Openbox, the titlebar is a theme element. Any theme element may have only 
one of
four textures: parentrelative (pseudo transparency), solid, gradient, or 
interlaced
(horizontal 1 px alternating stripes). Solids and gradients may also have a 
border,
but that is about as far as the options go. So there isn't any way to add a 
highlight
to the top of the titlebar- as far as I know.

Attached is an example of what the windows would look like without the original 
split
gradient highlight- shown an inactive and active window.

I've played around with openbox titlebars, but I think it's best to give full 
support
for the desktop environment before including window borders for it.

For example, I've noticed many areas where Shiki doesn't theme correctly (such 
as
panels, etc). I probably have to make sure the GTK's are fully compatible with
Openbox before working on the window borders.

I like the Openbox themes. However I would remove the color from the title bar. 
IMO a
solid color looks nicer than a gradient.

Openbox is just a window manager which doesn't provide any kind of desktop or 
panel.
All which is possible to theme is the windows borders, menus and alt+tab 
dialog. It
does not use gtk neither so there is nothing that can be improve by that way.
perfectska04, if you tried some livecd like crunchbang, the panel is a separate
program. Openbox is just the windows borders and menus.

Hope to see an official openbox theme to complete my desktop =)

I think my previous comment referred to pypanel/lxpanel or whichever was used 
in the
past Crunchbang releases. I noticed the lack of panel theming there, although 
the new
release uses tint2 - with a dark configuration, so it certainly makes 
Crunchbang more
compatible with Shiki.

I've only been testing the new crunchbang for a while, and I'm relatively
inexperienced with tint2 configs and openbox window borders, but hopefully I can
release something before summer ends.

DanielBarrettBolton's design is a good start, but some fine-tuning is still 
needed to
make it as close as possible to the original metacities - only with a completely
square look.

After some googling around, I also found this one:

The gradients/top highlight look like pixel-perfect clones of the current
Metacity/XFWM. I'd say, with some meny tweaks and perhaps fixing the oddly 
stretched
titlebar buttons it would make the perfect openbox theme for Shiki.

nvm, the above seems to be fluxbox only. I don't know about flux/openbox
inter-compatibility, but the general idea is good. Perhaps it can be ported to 
openbox?

It can't- Fluxbox themes use pixmaps. I think it's about as close as possible. I
could remove the colors from the title bars to make solid gradients though.

Not to butt in here, but I've got some openbox themes over at my deviantart 
page that may work rather well 
for this. They were created for the Murreza theme, though I can tweak the 
colors to match those in the shiki 
colors themes. The only thing I would be worried about with my themes would be 
the buttons, because I've 
used a different set than the Shiki ones.

The openbox theme is 'monocrisp' and is located here:

I changed the active titlebar to a gradient from #3c3c3c to #444444 like the 
metacity
theme (of course without the colored stripe).

destoys
shiki's apprearace of combined menubar and titlebar.
I used openbox's border, for a highlight of active and inactive windows. See the
screenshot:

For a good metacity clone, it would be needed to make the very outside border a
raised border. But openbox does not provide this feature. The very outside 
border is
always solid and only it's width and color can be modified.
In the screenshot above I use a variation of Shiki-Brave for gtk, with a little
darker gray than the original version. It's just a personal thing, but I don't 
want
to irritate anyone.
I tried to create round window buttons for the mouse hover effect, like 
metacity's,
but since openbox can only use xbm-files (1 bit per pixel), the buttons looked 
really
ugly. So I created squared highlight-buttons, which look really good. It also 
would
be possible to create the squares for highlight within the openbox theme, but it
makes no difference from my point of view.
The menu tries to fit the original Shiki-Brave gtk-theme as much as possible. 
But
there's is one pixel missing in the outline of a highlighted menu-item.
The rest of the theme is somewhat inconsistent. Since I had no good idea about 
how to
theme the osd-elements, and other window-button states.
The theme-file is somewhat cluttered. But currently I don't have the time to
structure it properly. So hopefully you don't mind. ;)

@QQZhenyi: well, it does! ;) You have one pixel on the left, that's lighter in 
the
titlebar, than in the menu. But if it's ok for you, I'm fine. I'm curious about 
perfectska04's opinion, since I'm no artist at all, and he does a very good 
job, from
my point of view.
