almost_mvp for current nexus #8

I started with the branch almost_mvp and made some fixes so it can run on nexus 3.28.1-01. In the end I could not publish any crate to this, but I don't really know what to set in .cargo/config.

After resolving merge conflicts, there don't appear to be any changes here. Gonna merge it just because it doesn't hurt. Will look into updating CI. Hopefully I can get things to where interested parties can pick up development.
