Closed dylanclaydon closed 2 years ago

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

Just installed my new Pi 4 with latest OS and Sonic Pi version but will not load. Just gets to welcome screen then "critical error could not boot sonic pi server. Complete newbie any help gratefully appreciated

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

just reading down and see that I have not in fact downloaded the latest version of sonic pi so will uninstall and try again

ethancrawford commented 3 years ago

@dylanclaydon - you're right - the correct version is the one from https://sonic-pi.net, not through the official Raspberry Pi OS software repository 🙂

ethancrawford commented 3 years ago

Have a try with our own one, and feel free to close this issue if it works for you 👍

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

Thanks for your speedy reply but I get a message from the installer, failed to provide correct identification please check passwords or account settings All the best, Dylan

How do you try to install it?

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

From GUI download rather than command line

@dylanclaydon when you double click the .deb file it will ask you for your admin user name and password so it can correctly install the files (and the dependencies). This is likely to be the same as the account/password you use to log in.

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

Wish it did Sam but it doesn't, just goes straight to error

@dylanclaydon are you using the latest Raspberry Pi OS (released on or after Jan 11th 2021)?

Also, could you try the terminal way to see if that works for you:

(within the directory you downloaded the deb file):

sudo apt update
sudo apt install ./sonic-pi_3.3.1_1_armhf.deb
dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

I've reinstalled with latest version of RaspiOS full, updated everything. Sonic Pi 3.1 is included in software but tells me I should update. Tried via installer and command line again. Installer gives me same message as before, Terminal tells me unsupported file.

@dylanclaydon what does the command line say when it doesn't work?

Also, can you run sudo ls and does that accept your password?

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

E: Unsupported file ./sonic-pi_3.3.1_1_armf.deb given on command line sudo ls gives me a list of folders Thanks again.

Hi Dylan You seem to be having quite a few problems with this. Your last comment is potentially significant. You should be able to install sonic pi 3.3.1 over ssh, but you will not be able to run it from there. Also, you must have the deb file sonic-pi_3.3.1_1_armhf.deb situated in a folder (probably the Downloads folder) on the Pi, and NOT on your Linux computer. If it is on the latter, you will have to copy it over to the Pi first. You could use scp (secure copy) for this if you know the syntax to use. Alternatively you could work remotely by using vncViewer on your Linux computer and VNCserver (which can be enabled by the raspberrypi config progrm on the Pi. However, if possible I would get it going with the pi connected to a monitor if you can. Assuming you DO have the deb file on your Pi, I would try this to install it (also making sure that 3.1 is removed as well) first cd to the folder on the Pi containing the deb file. In my case cd ~/Downloads

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade #to make sure your OS is up to date
sudo apt purge sonic-pi #gets rid of any existing install
sudo apt autoremove #gets rid of any supporting packages no longer required
sudo apt install ./sonic-pi_3.3.1_1_armhf.deb

You can type this lines in individually and should see output on the terminal when you push return after each one. assuming the install proceeds without error, you will then need to launch the pi with a monitor (or a vnc connection) in order to start Sonic Pi. I've just run the commands above on my Pi4 via ssh and it worked (I had the deb file in my Downloads folder already) Let us know how you get on. EDIT ONE FURTHER THOUGHT. You must have your pi connected to the internet for these commands to work. The sonic-pi package pulls in other packages which are required from there.

Thank you again for all your time. I shall have another go, perhaps now tomorrow as I've just hit another brick wall with SP not recognising my controller. Raspi OS sees it and I've enabled, refreshed and restarted all to no avail. Sadly no monitor available so must push on with the VNC connection. Yes, the files are saved to the Pi, not the PC

dylanclaydon commented 3 years ago

A quick update. The problem was running it headless. For some reason the password prompt wasn't displayed on the laptop screen. I have a 7" touchscreen but the Pi with the hifiberry hat won't fit in the case so having to have everything out naked on the bench (any good ideas for terminating the DSI ribbon cable with something more solid and "pluggable"?) Got Sonic Pi 3..1.1 running but high latency. As recommended by hifiberry I changed to low latency in Alsamixer, but Sonic Pi stopped loading after that. Need to connect the screen up again and see if there are any prompts I'm missing. Ideally I'd like to build a new box for the screen and be able to fix solid connectors I can plug in and out.

We have completely overhauled the building and booting systems in the recently released v4 of Sonic Pi:

https://github.com/sonic-pi-net/sonic-pi/releases

Please ensure you're using the latest Raspberry Pi OS and then give v4 a try and feel free to create a new issue if you're still having problems.
