Backlight commands not working

Which board (stock / gruvin9x / sky9x) are you using?

What steps will reproduce the problem?

backlight only lights up when Mode=Both and Duration=0s
Please provide any additional information below.
I installed the Smartieparts 9x solderless programmer board and the HK white 
LED backlight, connected to the SD board with the provided connector. People 
from Smartieparts are not familiar with Open9x (they use ER9x9, hence they 
can't help but suspect the cause is the inversion of off/on states of the 
backlight which the connection implies.

Which options did you select in companion9x to download open9x? You will need 
SP22 depending on your SmartieParts board version.
