make the chasms a small little cave with a ghostrole for a guy who lives at the bottom of the chasms.
Falling into a chasm should ~break your bones~ deal a small amount of blunt and bring you to a small village (roughly the side of the aspid kitchen/bar area probably) in legally-distinct-lavaland, where a small colony (2-3) of ghost role legally-distinct-ashwalkers live. From here, if you aren't instantly killed by the ashwalkers, you can try mining enough ore and smelting it with a bonfire to make yourself a unique item, the station fulton (which instantly fultons you back to the station, maybe on top of a salvager job spawn point?), from a crafting bench (reskinned autolathe) the ashwalkers would have. Gives salvagers a small minigame, doesn't instantly kill them, and gives players fun ghost roles.
Ashwalkers would be unable to use guns and would have unique crafting menu items using bones like Arachnids with silk. They also should probably not be allowed to use hardsuits or power tools. These ones would be like, colony exiles, or something, which explains why they (hopefully) aren't immediately hostile to salvagers.
