fix: regression introduced with 23.09.1 in MqttItem.publish #422

In 23.09.1 a regression in MqttItem.publish was introduced.

Thank you for the PR. I found some other mqtt issues while testing this and added your proposed fix there. I hope it's okay if I'll close this PR in favor of my other changes.
