Description

There are several excellent repositories for open textbooks; however, there are many high quality OERs that are not open textbooks that educators would benefit from being able to discover. These might include websites such as neuroanatomy.ca, sets of simulations such as those from phet.colorado.edu, and even open textbooks that do not qualify to be placed into the major open textbook repositories (e.g., because of the use of the ND clause). This project aims to produce a curated and annotated list of these resources, organized within an open textbook (with each discipline appearing as a separate chapter) that can easily be shared and updated over time.

What are we working on during the do-a-thon? What kinds of support do we need?

We will need subject matter expertise, experience with searching for OER, contacts and communication with people not at OpenCon to help discover what non-textbook OERs educators are using. Participants will need a laptop.

How can others contribute?

Suggest some disciplines to start with (those you are most familiar with). We will work in Google docs during the do-a-thon and later import our content into Pressbooks, a popular open textbook platform that will enable easy sharing and reuse. We will set up a mechanism (e.g., Hypothes.is) to enable comments and additional suggestions after the do-a-thon. This effort will benefit from drawing on our networks to lengthen and strengthen out list after the initial push. Participants wanting to join our session remotely will be given access to the Google doc, which supports concurrent collaborative editing.

What we're working on right now:

People who know of oer resources/collections are adding links to the google doc. Feel free to do the same if you know of things

Those who don't have that expertise are pulling out information on those resources, formatting, and sorting by subject area (Heading level 1 for subjects, heading level 2 for subtopics). Feel free to get involved in this as well. Information we are including is as follows:

Title: Link to resource: Type: Language: License: Description: Adopters (if known): Creators (who controls the resource): Reviews/Assessments (if available):

We are trying to focus on large-scale resources: OER repositories, collections, course-orientated websites rather than individual items such as a video or worksheet.

Here's a guide created by a colleague a couple of years ago. Lots of good resources, but I made it private because I haven't had the opportunity to clean up the blurriness between resource types beyond adding "affordable" to the title. May be a good place for you all to begin: http://libguides.uta.edu/oerbycollege/home (Let me know if you have any trouble accessing.) I'd much rather link out to a resource than attempt to maintain my own, so I look forward to what this group creates!

I know of a textbook or two that aren't always included in major repositories; are individual textbooks desired here too, or collections? Or mostly non-textbook items?

I also know of some free resources in philosophy but they aren't all openly licensed. And some collections of public domain philosophy texts...is that the kind of thing that might go here?

Just trying to get a sense of what is desired.

I think the family of Wikimedia projects — Wiktionary, Wikisource, Wikibooks, Wikimedia Commons, Wikispecies, Wikidata, Wikipedia etc. &mash; represents a massive collection of OER materials and probably merits mention in some way, perhaps separately for reuse in unmodified form and for reuse (both to and from Wikimedia) in part or in modified form.

Thank you everyone. The do-a-thon was just an effort to kick start this project which a colleague at BCcampus has been working on. I hope we can share this soon (building it in Pressbooks, with each chapter for a different discipline) so the community can keep suggesting updates.

@clhendricksbc Textbooks may be included, but only those that are not already in the major repositories (e.g., BCcampus, OTN). So likely only those that have an ND license, etc.

Thanks @greeneterry for mentioning free-programming-books. We're big fans of BCcampus - don't hesitate to reach out to me - we're very interested in different ways to crowdsource and distribute open resource metadata.

Also, PressBooks is a great tool, but also look at Gitbook as a means for collecting and distributing the OER "Anthology". You may find the workflow easier to adapt for larger numbers of contributors/editors.

BCcampus has taken on maintaining an OER by Discipline Guide (hosted in Pressbooks), and the work that everyone did at OpenCon during this do-a-thon was a huge help in getting it off the ground.

It's very much a work-in-progress, and we plan to add to it whenever we find new resources.

Please check it out, and feel free to send us feedback or other resources by emailing me (josie.gray@bcampus.ca) or through this submission form: Suggestion for the Collection. I will also activate hypothesis on it, so people can use that as well.

Absolutely. Please use it, share it, and spread the word however you can.

Also, there is a versioning history page in the back matter where changes and updates will be tracked.
