Submission name: How might we connect OA, OER and copyright reform/users rights communities, so that restrictive trade agreements and copyright law don't limit the function of OA and OER? Contact lead: mjacob@wcl.american.edu Issue area: #OpenAccess, #OpenData, #OpenEducation, #OpenResearch Region: #Global Issue Type: #Challenge

Description

While openness is the primary goal of many people's work, the existing copyright systems an increased copyright protection through trade agreements and copyright law reform can reduce the ability to build and share knowledge. Conversely a robust system of copyright limitations and exceptions can work with open access and open educational resources to reduce the impact that copyright has on the ability to do high quality, open teaching and research.

This session will focus on crafting stories, anecdotes and other messages that will help open champions engage in both political and institution focused copyright advocacy.

How can others contribute?

In the doathon we'll be working to identify stories that are motivating to help OA and OER champions understand how and why they should care about copryight law reform and the copyright policy choices made in their institutions.

Working in the google doc here: session notes - copyright stories

I think there's not going to be time to do this in-person, but I'll try to schedule some working time in early December if anyone wants to connect there.

Also, here's a form to sign up to get more involved in Creative Commons and copyright advocacy: bit.ly/getinvolvedCC
