Secrets App Not Updating to Latest Version #94

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. When opening Secrets app the Version is listed at bottom.
2. When visiting this site Secrets is on a newer version
3. There is no auto-update feature, could pose a security risk if an important
update is released patching a security flaw.

Google Secrets should have a "check-for-update" feature. I am using v1.9.6.

Providing a "check-for-update" feature or "auto-update " (ala Chrome) would
significantly enhance security of the app to allow for the app to be patched
reliably. Otherwise, this site must be visited daily to ensure I am on the
latest version.

1.9.6 is the latest released version at this time. Secrets already uses the
standard android auto-update mechanism.

As fixes and new features are made, these will be committed to the svn
repository. Its possible for svn to contain unfinished works in progress, that
are not ready to be released to users. As these features become ready, Secrets
will be auto updated using the standard mechanism.

What is the "standard mechanism"? I have been using Secrets since 12/17/2009
and I have never seen a notification to update, either on the G1 or the Nexus
One.

Doing a search in the Market for "Secrets" produces "0" results for the Secrets
app. The Market has a clear mechanism for notifying the user of app updates.

Since Secrets is not available in the Market, what mechanism does the app use
that could be categorized under the "standard android auto-update mechanism"?

Secrets is available on the market.

Searching for "Secrets" produce many hits. Try searching for "Secrets for
Android".

The "standard mechanism" is the auto-update mechanism built into the market.

If you didn't install secrets from the market, how did you install it? Did you
download and install directly from this website? If so, then its likely that
you will not get the standard market notifications as new updates are released.
To get the update notification, please do the following:

- make sure you can find secrets on the market. (If you've rooted your phone,
or you are running a very old version of Android, you might not)
- backup your secrets using the Backup menu item
- uninstall secrets
- look for secrets on the market and install from there
- use the *exact same* master password as before when prompted
- restore your secrets using the Restore menu item

Secrets is made available on this site for those Android devices that don't
have access to the market. If your device does have access, you should
install it from the market.

Great, let me know if you have problems. I have also updated the main page on
this site to now suggest installing the app from the market.
