Kvaal et al 1995 Age estimation of adults from dental radiographs #652

Open fedamann opened 3 years ago

fedamann commented 3 years ago

Takes 6 measurements across 12 possible teeth: UNS: 8, 7, 4, 9, 10, 13, 23, 22, 21, 26, 27, 28 FDI: 11, 12, 15, 21, 22, 25, 32, 33, 34, 42, 43, 44

To each tooth above add the following 6 measurements: Maximum tooth length Root length on the mesial surface Maximum pulp length Root and pulp width at enamel-cementum junction (ECJ) (A) Root and pulp width midway between measurement levels A and C (B) Root and pulp width midway between apex and ECJ (C)

@mcummaudo (1) pls verify translation from FDI to UNS numbering, (2) will you also provide a min and max for each of the six measurements.

mcummaudo commented 3 years ago

Dear @fedamann and @SachinPawaskarUNO, the translation from FDI to UNS is correct. Unfortunately, we can't provide a min and a max for the six measurements since in the original publication the author does not report any of them. I tried to have a look to other articles testing kvaal method on different populations but none of them provide minimum and maximum values. Is it a big issue?

fedamann commented 3 years ago

@mcummaudo not a big issue at all. It's only needed for setting quality checks on data entry errors. Do you have data recorded for these six measures across multiple teeth? If so we can use the distribution and build in the min max measures, otherwise we can set some values that make sense to start -- must be greater than 2 mm and less than 50 mm.

Dear @fedamann and @SachinPawaskarUNO , sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I asked my colleagues and unfortunately no one has a set of tooth measurements for the Kvaal method. Since the method is based on ratios, we usually take the measurements in pixel (not mm) with Adobe Photoshop and then calculate the ratios between measurements. We have a special excel file that automatically provides the age estimation (as shown in the picture below).

However, I found the following measurements from a dental anatomy book:

Tooth Total length (mm) Mesiodistal crown width (mm)
8/9 24 8,4
7/10 22,5 6,5
4/13 21,5 6,5
23/26 23,2 9,9
22/27 25,4 6,7
21/28 18,5-27 6,0-8,0

I don't know if they can be useful.
