The old and new versions of the wordfence plugin both cause the WP admin page to crash if they're present in the wp-plugins directory. The initial wordpress automatic upgrade failed for some reason (possibly releated?), but I was able to get it working with a command line install, after which the database successfully updated. I've updated themes and plugins, also updated PHP to verison 7.4, but wordfence still breaks wordfence. This should be fixed ASAP as wordfence had been blocking large numbers of potential attacks on a daily basis.
It turns out I just needed to increase the memory limit to 256M in the wordpress config. All plugins, including wordfence, are now up to date and appear to be working.
