The number of stations that we use for calculating the AE index have slowly diminished over time. Originally we had 30 reliable stations we used for calculations. Over the years the stations have slowly been reduced to 20 stations. It is likely to decrease in the next few years. A new set of gmag stations should be added to the list. This was done back in 2012. Not a high priority since the ae index we currently calculate matches the index from Kyoto. Just something to note
