Something about the way parental control (pin protection) is implemented is breaking the ESPN app. The app appears to start as a pin is requested. After successful pin entry, the app just goes to a black screen.
I've don't a lot of troubleshooting on this and the only thing that makes a difference in this behavior is parental control pin protection using projectivy launcher.
This behavior only started a month or so ago.
I did actually report this to ESPN (before I had done the troubleshooting) and it was actually during their troubleshooting that I discovered what seems to be the root cause.
It's not a terrible problem to disable parental control pin protection on this one app, but it would be nice to have it fixed.
