So the New Materials feature is independent from the catalog (new or old). It could definitely use an update and some enhancements but sadly that is not likely to happen anytime soon.
That use case you describe is pretty far outside the scope of what it is, or was, designed to be. I like the hack but I wouldn't expect it to work all that well. Does a subject search with results sorted by pub date descending not work for this purpose?
Ah, I see. It definitely could use some enhancing. I don't use the New Materials browsing myself but I do see a few people using it when they do browse the catalogs.
On our catalog itself, there is a filter to narrow the collection to new adult non-fic. So, that is theoretically better than browsing new materials. I'll let Joanna know this and see if its better than browsing the entire New Materials part of our website.
Joanna brought up to me today that she used to be able to browse our 'new materials' section of our website with certain subject headings that have gone missing. She pointed out that the architecture one was a big one and now she can't find it. I did notice there was an option to sort the new material by call number and filter it, and that does help to order it. But she and I were wondering if there was a way to get the generalities of each Dewey number as a heading to search so there would at least be a reference point since there are some staff who do look at certain new materials to tell patrons what is new in that particular section?
I would guess this would be more of an enhancement option to our current catalog
