According to the license information at https://developer.spotify.com/terms/#iii, you don't need to ask permission to use the web API for anything except commercial applications. Have a university lawyer review the terms to be sure, but Spotify's attitude towards this tends to be "have fun."
We are examining different methods in an academic project, which lead to a better investment advice and personalized product recommendations. In the course of the research we are looking for new factors, which weren’t used before in the case of investment profiling, such as media consumption habits. We would like to know, if you would permit access to your web API, so we can integrate it into an online questionnaire, where respondents optionally give us their log in data to get access to their personal data, playlists, and other music listening habits. We would use this data to create new investment personalization factors by matching them with other answers they gave in the survey. This could improve the product recommendation of the investment services and the investor satisfaction as well over the long run. Thank you for your answer!
