JSR-303 @Valid is ignored #9872

Using Spring Boot 1.5.4

I have entity classes annotated with JSR-303 annotations. I have a controller class that the post maps to and the object is annotated with @Valid. I'm expecting that leaving my field blank will result in BindingResult to have errors but it always shows zero errors. When I turned out my trace logging, I noticed something unusual.

2017-07-26 14:05:55.871 DEBUG 17805 --- [nio-8080-exec-7] o.s.core.annotation.AnnotationUtils      : Failed to meta-introspect annotation [class com.sun.proxy.$Proxy137]: java.lang.NoSuchMethodException: javax.validation.Valid.value()

I believe the exception that I found in my logs is preventing Hibernate validator from creating instances of the constraint validation implementations.

I have confirmed that javax.validation:validation-api:1.1.0.Final and org.hibernate:hibernate-validator:5.3.5.Final are on the classpath (see screen shots)

[Updates] I updated the application to use an embedded database and in memory authentication. Here are the steps needed to reproduce the issue.

  1. Start the application
  2. Navigate to /admin
  3. Enter admin for the user name and admin for the password
  4. Leave the text field for Role Name blank and click on Submit
  5. The form should display the text 'Enter a role name' but fails due to the bean validation bug. The logs will show a NoSuchMethodException: javax.validation.Valid.value() as mentioned above.

Can you please provide a smaller, pure Java, sample that shows the issue?

@philwebb Really sorry about that. Your error was caused by the fact that you didn't have a database server running. I switched the application to use an embedded database server and changed it to use in memory authentication.

In the mean time, I'll try and write a simple project that reproduces the error.

It turns out to be an issue with the Kotlin compiler and not Spring Boot. The JSR-303 annotations in my entity classes are getting dropped from the bytecode unless I specify @get: NotBlank or @field: NotBlank etc. Closing this issue since it's not a Spring Boot bug.

Sure! Here is the bug report for KT-19289. In a nutshell, some Java annotations do not have the @Target meta-annotation and for such annotations, Kotlin defaults them to the property rather than the field or getter. The workaround is to explicitly specify where to put such annotations by specifying @field or @get.
