For Oral History Items, the layout will be the same as the regular "text" item page except that there will be an audio player +link to transcript instead the OpenSeadragon viewer. I know this is different than the layout you sketched, but I think consistency is important. That OK?
Can you send me an example oral history item from the current site to work with?
Yes - I'm in favor of consistency, too - as long as it's not too ugly once you see it worked up.

Something to look at: http://eh.alt.services/items/show/3
So, are you thinking the transcript would be a separate Omeka Item or a PDF/text file that you download?
Also note that videos work too: http://eh.alt.services/items/show/4 (it won't work with .mov files -- you'll need to use .mp4)
There's the issue of layout: I decided to reduce the right-hand column for audio items b/c it looks silly with a big audio player... and then I decided to use the same layout for video items b/c they will most-likely be the same "type" as the audio items (i.e., oral histories). Image-based (i.e., Text) items haven't changed-- still has the big right column. I'm not sure if having two layouts is wise, so let me know what you think.
Also when you mix multiple media elements in the same item, it will use the small right-hand column layout. Do you foresee that happening a lot?
The transcript won't be a separate item - ideally, within this format, it'd be a PDF or text file that would open in a separate window (so that the media player and the transcript can be viewed at the same time, without having the distortion to the metadata that is having the one huge metadata field for transcript mixed in with all of the others. Open to ideas on how to make this work.
As for multiple media on a given item, I think that's less likely to happen (ex. not likely to have audio and video together). The only shift would be having a picture of the interviewee with an OH clip - which could be nice. Then the stacking of them, as you have it, could work (it creates metadata problems though... ie, the metadata can't describe both the pic and the clip - so we'd probably still have those as separate items.)
FYI, the show/3 had the media player visible when I looked at home last night, but on my desktop this morning I'm not seeing the player. Not sure what that's about.

OK, let's go with PDFs then. The theme will use the first PDF in the file list as the transcript. A link will appear below the audio player. Sound good?

Sounds good - but how will that work with the existing metadata field for Transcript - are you able to build off of that here, or are we creating a redundancy?

I thought you were saying you didn't want to use that field, you wanted a file. (The Transcript field can only take text, not files). If you want, we could display the Transcript field text under the player and make that column wider so it's readable--i.e., move it from the right-column, with the rest of the metadata, to the left where it will look more like body text for the page.

That sounds good, but my only hesitation is that with long transcripts, you wouldn't be able to see the media player as you scroll down to read the transcript. That's why the pdf option sounded like a good one, so that there would be two windows. Perhaps both are possible? 1) Move transcript field to the left side, and 2) Add a button to download a pdf of the transcript?
Does that sound workable to you?

Sound good.

I thought you were saying you didn't want to use that field, you wanted a file. (The Transcript field can only take text, not files). If you want, we could display the Transcript field text under the player and make that column wider so it's readable--i.e., move it from the right-column, with the rest of the metadata, to the left where it will look more like body text for the page.

Sounds good - but how will that work with the existing metadata field for Transcript - are you able to build off of that here, or are we creating a redundancy?

OK, let's go with PDFs then. The theme will use the first PDF in the file list as the transcript. A link will appear below the audio player. Sound good?

As for multiple media on a given item, I think that's less likely to happen (ex. not likely to have audio and video together). The only shift would be having a picture of the interviewee with an OH clip - which could be nice. Then the stacking of them, as you have it, could work (it creates metadata problems though... ie, the metadata can't describe both the pic and the clip - so we'd probably still have those as separate items.)

So, are you thinking the transcript would be a separate Omeka Item or a PDF/text file that you download?

Yes! Looks great, but can we move tags and citation above transcript? [so that they're not off-screen for really long transcripts?]
