Create microgames for the SR2021 Kickstart #634

At Kickstart we usually have the teams perform some introductory tasks to get them familiar with the kit and to establish that they can safely charge their batteries. The tasks also help give them a starting point in programming and familiarity with asking Blueshirts for help. Examples from previous years:

Do we actually want to have these? What do they look like in a virtual kickstart/competition?

Broadly I can see a sliding scale of approaches here:

  1. we go even more structured than we normally would -- have a guided session on creating their first robot
  2. we do roughly what we'd normally do, but ensure the tasks are achievable without any physical kits
  3. we let them get started coding immediately, but explicitly turn it into the first tech day
  4. we do nothing -- just let the teams start on their coding

I'm a big fan of 2, however given our limited capacity I think that 3 would still be useful to the teams while also being something we could do with very little preparation. Either would mean that we might need to work out what a remote participation tech day looks like, however that's something I think we're going to solve anyway. I also think that either could be run without live interactions if needed.

Generally microgames require a proof-of-work to be shown to a blueshirt, who then gives the team a subsequent task. We'd need to work out how that'd work. Unless we just give them the lot.

The issue with running it as a tech day is that we'd need to solve how we're going to run tech days in a safeguarding-compliant way, all before kickstart.

I wonder if instead, given that we'll already be giving them a functional chassis, we instead give them small tasks to do instead to get familiar with the kit, but without needing our direct involvement. Almost more like starter exercises than microgames in the conventional sense.
