Everything toolbar doesnt recognize everything search is running.

Windows Version

21H1, 19043

Steps to reproduce

Step 1: Install Everything search Step 2: Install everything toolbar Step 3: Have everything toolbar not recognize Everything search is running.

Step 4: Dont profit.

Expected Behavior

Everything toolbar recognizing that everything search is running, and hooking it into itself.

Actual Behavior

Everything toolbar running bare without an actual search function to back it up.

Additional Information

I read somewhere that i needed to put 1.5a into the everything toolbar settings.

Didnt fix the problem.

Oh, right, sorry. You should make that a field in the template for next time.

In that case the instance name should be left blank. The 1.5a name is only in case you are using the Everything 1.5 alpha which is not the case for you.

Another possible reason for EverythingToolbar not working could be that you installed the "Lite" version of Everything, which does not support the inter process communication required for third-party applications. You can double check that in the "About Everything..." window.

Thanks for the help, but blank doesnt work either.

No i dont have the lite version.

Everything service starts at launch, and the toolbar doesnt hook into it even with the empty blank field. I need to manually launch the everything window once for the toolbar to recognize that its running, despite the service itself starting with windows itself

The Everything service is necessary but the Toolbar needs the client running. So you must also enable "Start Everything on system startup"

Huh. I see.

Any chance you could make it so that the service itself is enough? Seems like an arbitrary limitation to me

For your info, the service is only to prevent the UAC. The client does the indexing, so not starting the client means a big delay on the first startup. The concept is running the client which indexs all updates in real time.

Why do you want to prevent the UAC?

No one wants to get a UAC question on system startup for services. The service runs with the necessary priviledge to let the client index NTFS volumes. All Microsoft and 3rd party services run like this, there is nothing to change.

Yea but having to autostart the client is almost as annoying beccause then the user is blotted in the face with a window they are just going to close immediately

No, the user doesn't see that window from Autostart at all. Its just a symbol in the tray.

No, I have Everything installed since many years and there is never ever a Window shown if "Start Everything on system startup" is configured. If you see the startup you have set some link to it anywhere.
