Eliminate dead code #30

Just remove some more dead code to prevent bit rot.

Would you be open to introduce standard to this package? I know Dominic has expressed previously that he usually only does that when others start maintaining his packages (I think?), but since this is such a central piece of ssb, I think whatever will prevent bit rot will be beneficial :)

Oh yeah, and it goes without saying that I would of course do the clean up and add tests as necessary to ensure compatibility. I don't think there will be any code moved around, simply stylistic changes
