should this happen automatically? If so, during what operations?
should this be accomplished with another function?

Handling at the batch level

probably should have an option to bulk delete
should report all of the broken bookmarks

Partially dealt with in recent update to gp via commit 22941b712333835bdadf919b3b7c48c534efd417

Cleanup of broken bookmarks is an incoming feature as of v3.0.0.pre. Included in that version is support for removing broken absolute bookmarks with a flag to _PATHS_DP.
