Tethering drops internet connectivity randomly #509

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Which device (manufacturer, type)? G1 and MT3G

Which firmware is installed? 2.2 RC1

What version of wireless tether are you using? 2.0.5-pre7

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start tethering
2. Connect computer
3. Surf internet

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
My internet connection will drop to limited or no connectivity, or drop
internet speeds to near 0 and then drop connectivity.

Please provide any additional information below.
Running command window "Ping google.com -t" shows connection working:

Reply from 74.125.45.99: bytes=32 time=210ms TTL=45

It seems under high load, the connection will drop out and produce a Very high
ping time to the server when connectivity comes back

Limited or no connectivity lasts usually from 5 seconds to a few hours.
Disconnecting and reconnecting to connection makes no difference. Results have
been duplicated on more than one computer with updated drivers, etc and more
than one handset, a G1 and MT3G both are running Froyo and running the latest
android-wifi-tether

What happens if you ping the default-gateway (your phone) from your client
(your pc).

ping 192.168.2.254 -t

Timeouts?

I get a similar problem on my Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) using pre-7 and pre 8

It would drop data connection on both my phone AND my computer (I cant go to
any website).

I do not get the "Limited or no connectivity" issue.

Only way to solve the data issue is to disable Wifi Tether and re-enable it.

When I ping the default gateway from the client, I get no timeouts when
connectivity drops. I ping both the default gateway and google.com
simultaneously and when the connection to Google timeouts, the ping time for
the default gateway shoots up to something like time=2536.

@nguyener That is exactly what I get, but if I let the computer "Timeout" long
enough, it will throw a "Limited or no connectivity" in my Event Log.

BTW, both of the phones are being connected to Windows 7 computers, one is my
Gateway netbook running Win 7 Home Prem, the other is my desktop running Win 7
Ultimate

If you are able to ping constantly the gateway there is nothing wrong with the
connection between the phone and your client-pc. So I would say the problem is
the mobile-data connection. What signal-level do you have where you have done
you ping-test? Settings -> Telefon Info -> Status -> Signal strength

Yes connection drops for me too, using 2.0.5-pre7 on my Netarchy rooted (HTC
OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6 (Rooted) Odexed), HTC Evo 4G phone, at
random times. So at least once an hour I have to stop and restart tethering app
on my phone. On my laptop the wireless network is gone when I check after I
lose connection.

I just installed 2.0.5-pre8 and now waiting to see if it's the same problem, so
far so good (30 minutes)

My signal strength is a constant -73dBm 20asu. I have a 3G cell tower no even 2
miles from my house on top of the mountain, so I always have 5 bars of 3G. My
wife's phone (MT3G), same thing, 5 bars, -73dBm 20 asu.

Any ideas people? I even have trouble with the USB tethering as well. My
connection will be fine for a minute or two, then no data connection on the
phone. Even opening the browser or Market says no data connection.

Happening to me, too, with an EVO and 2.0.5-pre9. It seems to be happening more
frequently than it did a month ago--perhaps every 15 or 20 minutes now. I have
to stop tethering and then start again. I have full bars. I see no difference
when I am charging or on battery.

Try changing the frequency within the settings of the app. I had the issue
until I switched to option 1.

Try it out.

Using Pre9 for Evo 4g I had to crank up to channel 12 to get a consistent
connection. Thanks for the heads up David.

I forgot to respond--yes, thanks for the advice, David! Channel 1 works great
for me. I had changed channels several times before but guess I hadn't hit the
right one yet. Problem solved.

When I switched to channel 1, my problem went away! It used to disconnect every
5-10-20 minutes before, and now rock solid! Interestingly, channel 12 didn't
help but 1 did the trick.

same here, ad-hoc not even visible on other channels. Switched on channel 1 and
it's there and does not drop!

android 2.2 rooted on droid 2. same results with barnacle and wireless tether
apps.

i'm using channel 1 (which doesn't clash with other networks according to
wifianalyzer). tried 8 and 12, but they didn't make a difference.

my mobile cell network signal strength is 70db according to the phone's
settings.

i can view youtube videos perfectly directly from my phone. it's fast and works
great.

pinging my gateway consistently has pings near 1ms - rock solid all the time.
so the wifi seems solid.

Pinging google.com from my laptop through the phone gets around 200ms. The
problem starts when i try to watch a 240p video or load a couple of webpages at
the same time. The ping times go sky high and then turn to "request timed out".
stopping the youtube streaming brings pings back down to 200ms. the gateway
pings remain solid 1 or 2ms throughout.

i tried enabling and disabling encryption, but the issue still persists.

i'm out of ideas... unfortunately the channel fixing just doesn't fix it for me
like it did for some of you.

Evo 4G w/2.3.3 w/ Fresh Evo 4.2 and 3.1 beta 6. Quickly drops/reconnects at
random, despite using different channels. Clamping on as explained below:

Originally 2.2 w/ OMJ v4.6 Deodexed and 2.0.8 pre1. Worked great until 10/19.
Starting then, I could only go to Google sites. OMJ would FC immediately with
any other Android-wifi-tether APK, so I switched to Fresh 4.2, installed 3.1
Beta 6 and used clamping. The Google-site issue stopped, but the intermittent
disconnect/reconnect started.

I'll owe ya one if you can help. I don't have Internet access without
tethering. So this is critical for me.
thanks!
