Does not look like there's been any progress here for quite a while.

Seems to be. I haven't seen a maintainer here for a long time. I think ECO has been superceeded by ECT, have a look at http://ectjs.com and see if it fits your needs

Except that I don't believe ECT has sprockets support yet. #sigh
