Hi @arias007

If I understand correctly, you would like to have a flashcard such as:

#flashcards

Question::[[Document with answer.pdf]]

Then when reviewing the card you want it to show as: image

Then if you click on the "Document with answer.pdf" link, you want the file to be opened by the external xodo utility.

Is that correct?

arias007 commented 6 months ago

yes

Hi @arias007

If I understand correctly, you would like to have a flashcard such as:

flashcards Question::[[Document with answer.pdf]]

Then when reviewing the card you want it to show as: image.png (view on web)

Then if you click on the "Document with answer.pdf" link, you want the file to be opened by the external xodo utility.

Is that correct?

I'm curious why the need to open the pdf specifically in xodo?

Does the pdf reader embedded in Obsidian not work for you?

arias007 commented 6 months ago

Other PDF readers are also available, but xodo does have something special, as shown below picture:

You also know everything can be quickly converted to PDF for quick learning, and building cards is sometimes troublesome.

Sorry but the picture hasn't come through. You might need to log into GitHub and post directly rather than replying by email.

arias007 commented 6 months ago

It would be perfect if there was a share file button to open the PDF with third-party software.

Obsidian has an option Open in default app

So perhaps clicking on the link would show the file within Obsidian, right clicking would bring up a menu including the Open in default app

I need to open it in spaced repetioton and it's a bit of a hassle to switch back and forth each time.

Originally you said you wanted the pdf opened in xodo, but now you say you want the pdf opened within Obsidian?

What is it exactly you are after?

arias007 commented 6 months ago

I need to be able to click on the PDF link in the obsidian spaced repitition and open it with a third-party application such as xodo in a shared way.

Please explain what you mean by "in a shared way"

Do you mean that you want the pdf to be opened by xodo and appear within a new tab within Obsidian?

From all the applications that I'm familiar, opening a document with a third party application always opens it in a new (Operating system) window.

If there was a xodo plug-in for Obsidian, that probably would be different. But I just looked and there isn't one: https://obsidian.md/plugins?search=xodo

I think I understand the confusion.

I didn't write my suggestion clearly, but I didn't mean that a user would need to leave the flashcard review dialog box to select Open in default app.

Hopefully this is clearer...
