This fixes issue #43 with the most recent commit, the others are are from PR #41.
I amended the server-side request handler to send and take notifications from itself if it's running in single-player mode. There's probably a better long-term solution for this architecturally, but it's a good short term fix for a situation that's likely not yet worth its own logical abstraction.
