Exifs Annual World Photography Awards - Phtog #19

Open Hero-Gamer opened 3 months ago

phtog commented 3 months ago

Project Title: Exifs Annual World Photography Awards

**1) Total Grant Amount: $1000

**2) Project Description: The Exifs Annual World Photography Awards will be the first decentralized annual photography awards built on the Stacks blockchain. The competition will feature five distinct categories: Portrait Photography, Landscape Photography, Wildlife Photography, Street Photography, and Abstract Photography. Over a five-week period, photographers will enter their work into one of these categories. Each week will focus on one category, promoting it through Twitter threads, newsletters, and features on the "Art on Stacks" Twitter Space. Two photographers from each category will be selected—one by a panel of judges and one by community choice through public voting. Their work will be minted and auctioned on Gamma, with all proceeds going directly to the photographers. The competition aims to attract photographers and collectors to the Stacks NFT ecosystem.

3) Impact: The Exifs Annual World Photography Awards will onboard new photographers and collectors to the Stacks NFT ecosystem, enhance the visibility of photographers, and promote the use of NFTs in the photography community. By offering free entry and leveraging a decentralized platform, the awards will democratize access to prestigious recognition and provide financial benefits directly to artists through NFT sales and auctions. Competition Structure: The competition will be structured as follows: Pre-Competition Marketing: Timeline: End of August - Early September 2024

Activities: A general marketing campaign will advertise the upcoming open calls and categories, allowing photographers to prepare their submissions. Open Calls: Timeline: Early September - Early October 2024 (5 weeks) Activities: Each week, a new category will be opened for submissions, starting with Portrait Photography and ending with Abstract Photography. Photographers will enter via a Blocksurvey form. The reason for opening one category per week is to maximize marketing around the open call, highlighting a specific style of art per week, making it the topic of the newsletter, and generating interesting interviews and conversations about the specific styles in the Twitter thread and Twitter spaces. Voting Period: Timeline: Mid-October 2024 (1 week) Activities: Voting for all categories will open one week after the submission period ends. Both public and judges' voting will take place simultaneously. The public will vote on a simple one-page website. Judges will independently vote on their selections. Winner Selection: Timeline: End of October 2024 Activities: Announce winners during a live show on Twitter. Winners will be featured in a newsletter and a Twitter thread. Auction and Exhibition: Timeline: November 2024 Activities: Winning photographs will be minted and auctioned on Gamma. Auctions will run for 24 hours. Winners will be featured on social media and in a digital exhibition. Extensive promotion around the minting and auction will be conducted.

4) Project Timelines, Milestones, and Deliverables: Kick-off payment: 0% - $0 Milestone 1: Project Planning and Development - 40% - $400 - Mid-July 2024 Deliverables: Description: Source a developer to build the website and plan the campaign. Target: Feature winning photographers on social media and conduct NFT auctions on Gamma. Ideas for Sustainability: Implement a small entry fee for future editions to cover operational costs. Secure long-term sponsorships from photography-related brands and organizations. Introduce a membership model for photographers with benefits like reduced entry fees, exclusive resources, and networking opportunities. Categories and Descriptions: Portrait Photography: Capturing the essence of individuals or groups, showcasing personality and emotion. Landscape Photography: Emphasizing the beauty of natural and urban landscapes. Wildlife Photography: Highlighting animals in their natural habitats. @phtog

Thank you for the update. It's great to hear that DNS and BNS have been secured for the website, and that the site build is in progress. It looks fantastic. To move forward with the approval of Milestone 1, please provide the detailed campaign plan in the comments on GitHub as outlined in your proposal to confirm, and include the developer's name as well. Additionally, please provide the BNS and DNS that have been secured. Once these details are provided, we can proceed with the milestone approval.

phtog commented 2 weeks ago

Hello, it’s good to hear from you!

In addressing your questions and concerns, please find herewith the following factual information and pointers.

1. This project is running one month behind due to being delayed from the outset as the First milestone payment was not received until August 27, 2024 when it had been stated and agreed to be paid by mid July 2024, hence the reason for the project being behind schedule by over one month.

You may verify this information through the Zero Authority DAO and also conversational exchanges on the Stacks Console, where in particular my concerns were raised and stated that the project would be delayed by one month because of late payment and not having received the contract, with many add on requests that were not made clear at the outset of this agreement.

2. The above statement obviously had an impact on Social Media accounts being started, managed and maintained in getting the right branding for the “X”, and “Instagram” platforms.

3. Unfortunately, engagement on Social Media posts is out of the control of the account posting content and rather down to algorithms and audiences. I would draw your attention to large organizations that have little to no engagement also with their posts, namely “World Photography Organization”, “Eyeshot” and many others, ironically in the same genre as this project.

4. The Stacks Community have been invited privately to contribute and engage with this project, including yourself but with no response, with the exception of Brett Herskope of Gamma whom replied and kindly agreed to be a category judge.

Extensive invitations have been sent out via LinkedIn to professionals in photography and brands but as yet no agreements or commitments have been made for judges and sponsorship, this is due to feedback saying that the timeframe is too short to be able to commit to this project. I refer you back to the reason and knock on effect for this being the delay in the first milestone payment not being received by the intended date and timeline.

5. Again, target marketing has been delayed by milestone payments being late, lack of interaction with posts by the community and very little support from community members and mentors to date.

6. Newsletters have been sent out to participants whom have subscribed via the website.

Yes you’re right in stating that there have been no participation in stacks spaces, this is because of the busy schedule of the project and other business interests that actually pay my bills. X spaces don’t pay for my time!

7. Once again, I would draw your attention to the project being delayed at the outset despite my best efforts trying to catch up and advance, to say that the timelines for open calls have not been adhered to, is a bit strong. The open calls were set for one month, which is short in photography competition terms, and staggered from October 1,2,3,4 and 5 to October 31. This is also the reason that potential judges and sponsors have given, that the timeframe is too short for them to commit, however they would be very interested for 2025.

8. Around one month ago, it was proposed that the Stacks Foundation may be a potential sponsor but sadly no feedback was forthcoming nor was anything confirmed albeit until now, it would seem. Therefore could you confirm in which capacity would the Foundation like to be a sponsor for EXIFS? The criteria and tiers are as follows;

• Overall Competition Awards Sponsor • Category Competition Awards Sponsor • Category Winner Prize Sponsor • Overall Winner Prize Sponsor

To conclude: This project will be completed which may not be on your terms, with or without the final milestone payment as my professional integrity is on the line. The competition awards will close on October 31, 2024 at 23:59 GMT as stated in the rules of entry, see website for details.

I’m open to any questions you may have. Thank you.

Thank you for the update, but after reviewing the progress for Milestone 3, it appears several key deliverables have not been fully met according to the original plan. Below are the concerns and required actions before this milestone can be approved:

Social Media Engagement:

  • The Twitter account was only started on September 17, with only 25 followers and fewer than 20 original posts.
  • Interaction on the posts is minimal to none, and there hasn't been enough interaction with or engagement from the Stacks community.
  • There have been only two mentions of Stacks in the entire marketing campaign. Onboarding to Stacks is only mentioned in the FAQ's.
  • There has been only one judge announced. According to the project plan, five judges should have been announced by now.

Instagram Presence:

  • Instagram, being the most popular platform for photographers, has seen only eight posts.
  • There should have been extensive marketing on this platform starting at the end of August.

Marketing:

  • According to the timeline, the marketing campaign should have started in late August.
  • Your social media posts only started 17 Sept.
  • There has been no visible newsletter activity, and no participation in the "Art on Stacks" Twitter Spaces.
  • The plan also outlined collaborative partnerships and press releases. There is no evidence of these partnerships being activated.

Judging and Voting:

  • As of now, only one judge has been publicly announced.
  • The open call was supposed to end early October, with voting/ judging taking place mid-October for one week, followed by the winners being selected by the end of October. It seems these timelines have not been adhered to.

Actions Required:

  • Update Website: Add all five judges and include Stacks Foundation as a sponsor.
  • Google Drive Link: Provide a link to a Google Drive folder showing all the entries, confirming that there are over 10 entries per category.
  • Announce Twitter Space: Provide a link to the Twitter Space where the winners will be announced.
  • Provide Evidence of Engagement: Share evidence of marketing efforts on Instagram, Twitter, and newsletters and Twitter Spaces. Confirm if a press release was distributed.
  • Complete community judging
  • Select all winners

Once these actions are completed, we can proceed with the approval of this milestone. Please ensure that all deliverables are aligned with the original proposal. Thank you, GK

Look at the lack of engagement here in 10 hours on “X” by one of the most prestigious photography competitions on the planet.

Thank you for your response, Paul.

I am aware of the date when initial payments were made and understand the impact it had on the timeline.

While I acknowledge the delay, it’s important to note that creating social media accounts and posting teaser content does not incur costs. These activities could have helped to engage potential participants and build momentum, regardless of the timeline adjustment.

Instagram is the primary platform for photographers, yet there are only 8 posts from your account. To provide some perspective, World Photography Organisation has 143k followers on Instagram with hundreds to thousands of likes per post, and Eyeshot has 157k followers. Engagement is key to success in photography competitions, especially on platforms like Instagram where the target audience is active.

I regret that I do not have the bandwidth to serve as a judge, as my expertise lies in fine art and music rather than photography.

Let me kindly remind you that my involvement in your project has gone above and beyond the requirements of my role.

For instance:

Here are the relevant documents that I prepared:

You expressed satisfaction with the effort I was putting into your project, and I quote:

"I’ve skimmed over your proposal for Exifs and at first glance it looks to have a good structure. I like your ideas and thoughtful process and organisation. I would like to thank you for all of this effort and support for Exifs."

And again:

"Hi, once again thank you for your work on Exifs. I’m happy to proceed with your plans as it’s pretty much how I envisaged the project to go."

On September 27th, I offered my assistance in writing a newsletter for your project, but I received no response beyond your thank you.

On October 1st, I invited you to a Twitter Space. You were unable to attend due to illness, which I fully understand. I then offered to host a Space specifically for Exifs, to which you agreed it would be a good idea, but I did not hear back from you.

While I understand that X Spaces doesn’t pay for your time, I would encourage you to prioritize engaging with the community on social media to ensure the success of your project. Engaging on platforms like Twitter Spaces was, in fact, part of the original proposal. Here’s a reminder of the marketing activities outlined in the project plan:

Original Marketing Campaign Details:

Additionally, please note that the Stacks Foundation is already a sponsor via the grant funding, which is essentially a form of sponsorship. While I agree that grant funding is not typically sponsorship, your proposal specifically aimed to onboard photographers to Stacks, so it was assumed they would be included in the marketing—not just in the fine print, but as a key element of the social media campaign. The question now is, who is your target audience when it comes to purchasing the minted photographs? If your target is the Stacks community, then engagement throughout the process, particularly through Twitter Spaces, would have been essential to build interest and awareness. If your target is the photographers’ audiences, then providing educational information on social media about NFTs, Stacks, and Gamma would have been critical to educate both photographers and their audiences on the ecosystem.

Let me remind you of the original proposal:

To build the first-ever decentralized annual World Photography Awards. Exifs will be the first-ever decentralized annual photography awards built on the Stacks blockchain with ten entry categories, awarding the top ten chosen photographs of participating photographers from each category. This will result in a total of 100 photographs being minted on Exifs via a web3 platform, alongside an in-real-life (IRL) awards ceremony and a traveling exhibition. The exhibition will be accompanied by a physical book of all 100 winning photographs, including biographies of the photographers and information about the imagery. The awards will be FREE TO ENTER.

The Exifs Annual World Photography Awards was intended to introduce many newcomers—both photographers and collectors—to the Stacks NFT ecosystem, benefiting from faster transaction speeds via Nakamoto. The project was aimed at photographers, collectors, gallerists, and industry brands.

While you have made progress, it's important to reflect on what has been achieved so far and what still needs to be done in order to fulfill the original vision of the project.

To conclude, the final $300 payment will be made once all the milestones are completed in accordance with the original proposal above.

Thank you for your efforts, and I look forward to seeing the project successfully come to completion.

Kind regards, GK

Hi Hero

Many thanks for taking the time to get in touch, it’s really appreciated.

Yes, as I initiated, I would not expect the final milestone payment to be made by the foundation as part of the grant as there have been some unforeseen obstacles with the project. I’d like to thank you and all involved with Stacks for this opportunity and kickstarting this project, onwards and upwards until success. As agreed, I’d like the amount to go back into the grant funding towards future usage for others.

As a side note, still can’t work out why a so called mentor (GK) would unfollow (on X) a couple of weeks ago, a project that she approved for funding. It’s quite baffling and unprofessional in my opinion, the red flag 🚩 should’ve been raised after our very first meeting call which was rudely interrupted by her husband and had to end abruptly, once again, very unprofessional in my opinion.

My project has been grilled for not getting enough engagement compared to established brands in the same medium but they have been marketing for 17 years and I have only just started. Much work has been done behind the scenes in private and through networking on the LinkedIn platform, with great success, I might add. I’m solely doing the job of a whole team, from admin, marketing and establishing new connections for future sponsorship, it’s been somewhat unfortunate that the time frame has been too short to complete the project right now.

These factors are not really relevant but thought you should know as you may want to put these on the record as actual events.

As we discussed in our X DMs, unfortunately, the final grant milestone did not meet the required standards as stated, so the last payment will not be disbursed.

Please know this decision doesn’t detract from our appreciation of your hard work and your initiative in applying for this grant. Sometimes, the most valuable lessons come from challenges, not just successes.

I hope you’ll continue to contribute to the Stacks ecosystem and support others in the community. Your leadership and dedication to advancing photography NFTs in Stacks make a real impact.
