Grant Application - Health Data Collection Interface #257

Closed tywall86 closed 2 years ago

tywall86 commented 2 years ago

Background What problems do you aim to solve? How does it serve the mission of a user owned internet? Currently, most user data related to health, fitness, and mindfulness is locked up in specific apps and controlled by companies providing the product or service. Namely, Apple, FitBit, 23andMe, Headspace, etc. Data in these platforms may not always stay available, and further, cannot be readily leveraged in the future if remaining trapped there.

What solution are you providing? Who will it serve? Initially, we want to provide a simple web interface that allows users to link up with their health and fitness apps to sync down their health related data from key providers and store them in their Stacks wallet/Gaia. It’s important users begin capturing this data right away as it is not always stored in perpetuity by the providers, can be made inaccessible when subscriptions end, or subject to date-boxed export limitations (i.e. you can only export your last 30 days of activity, beyond that is hard or impossible to get).

Allowing users to capture and store their data in this manner will be a key first step in starting down a much larger road of individuals eventually being able to leverage their health-related data in dapps and throughout the Stacks ecosystem where new incentive mechanisms can be unlocked. Down the line, we believe services will rise that enable more and more use for this data, but the connective tissue for getting it from Web 2.0 walled gardens out and usable in the metaverse don’t yet exist. We want to build these export tools now, so people can begin regularly syncing down their data for their own use. In the future, they may be able to share it with health insurance companies, medical business, nutrition companies, data marketplaces or even sponsors.

This solution will serve any person that uses services such as Headspace, 23andMe, FitBit, and more who would like to ensure that they always have access to their data and can leverage it in the future. In short, we aim to give people free tools to liberate their data from health, fitness and mindfulness apps and store it securely on Stacks.

Scope What are the components or technical specs of the project? What will the final deliverable look like? How will you measure success?

This is phase one in a larger picture of how data can and will be used. The main objective with this phase is to have a central housing that can import data from 23andMe (genetic data) as well as Headspace (mindfulness practice).

To start, it will be very simple: the software will connect with the 23andMe and Headspace applications to transfer the data. 23andMe is a one-time transfer and the Headspace data can be updated every 30 days.

The final deliverable will be a platform where users login using the Hiro web wallet, can then auth with their health and welness services, and pull their data to Gaia storage, while setting preferences (if available on that network) for ongoing sync schedules.

Success will be measured by the quality of the data exported (is it complete, readable/usable) as well as the ability for the application to regularly sync content. Regular syncing is our goal with each service, we are currently exploring which service this will be possible on as well as possible workarounds for those that intentionally impose limitations or make automated exports difficult.

Budget and Milestones What grant amount are you seeking? How long will the project take in hours? If more than 20, please break down the project into milestones, with a clear output (e.g., low-fi mockup, MVP with two features) and include the estimated work hours for each milestone.

Total Grant Request: $15k

M1: This will cover the initial build of the syncing ‘equipment’ for at least 2 major health or wellness services and the main build of the mechanism to store everything for the user in Gaia. We’ll be making sure we collect complete data (simple validation), have fallbacks for failed jobs, and that a user can browse their data in the app (though we will not be visualizing that data for them or ensuring its human readable at this time).

Note about which services we’ll support: This will be determined as we investigate each API. We’ll approach with a balance of being able to workaround basic limitations, but may swap Headspace for another service should it provide too difficult to provide a regular sync at this time.

$10K

M2: This milestone will cover the visual design and release of the application itself. We don’t anticipate it being a complex design, but we’ll be making sure users have an easy time of authorizing with their connected applications and setting up a regular data sync.

$5K

Team Who is building this? What relevant experience do you bring to this project? Are there skills sets you are missing that you are seeking from the community? Please share links to previous work.

I will be bringing a dedicated developer with experience in APIs/data management to work on M1 and leveraging Tintash or similar agency for the Stacks specific portions. I’ll managing both the software deliverables as well as gathering the initial users from both 23andMe and Headspace to test the software and then working to continue encouraging the (great) migration from locked-in services to secure personal storage on Stacks :).

Risks What dependencies or obstacles do you anticipate? What contingency plans do you have in place? The main obstacle I anticipate is limitations or difficulties with certain services that do not want to allow users to export their data easily. I expect one-time dumps to be straightforward, but want to build a ‘set it and forget it’ solution where users can connect once and know their data is being regularly synced and there’s no break in the data. Certain services may even try to proactively block us as the tools start to get used, so how far the sync can go and for how long they are stable is definitely a risk. If we reach that point though, we think that’s a great sign for the tool and imagine being able to invest in further maintenance on those workarounds or in building partnerships to solve the issue.

Community and Supporting Materials Do you have previous projects, code commits, or experiences that are relevant to this application? What community feedback or input have you received? How do you plan to share your plan to the community over time and as the final deliverable?

I plan to share the plan throughout development on Twitter and other community spaces, so I can get real time feedback from potential users and drum up more awareness and excitement.

Hi @tywall86 just checking in. Can you please provide us with an update on this grant? Thanks, Will

Hey Will,

It's been a journey! The first two developers I scoped out fell through for a variety of reasons, and I have a third who is the appropriate fit. I do believe the development will be completed within the next 2-3 weeks. I'll keep your updated accordingly.

Thanks for checking in.

Hello and thank you for participating in the Stacks Foundation Grants Program!

We are in the process of migrating from GitHub to the new Grants Dashboard. In order to complete your grant, you will need to submit any remaining Progress Review and/or Final Review requests through the Dashboard in order to receive your remaining payments.

Lastly, please note we are marking this grant 'closed' on GitHub for organizational purposes, but it is still 'open' on the Grants Dashboard.

Thanks and we hope to continue to support your efforts with additional grants!

Best, Will

Hi Will,

I'm unsure of what to do here. I just linked my Discord to the new Dashboard but am unsure of where to go.

Mitchell connected me with a new developer on Tuesday after the first two ghosted on the project, so it's finally underway again.

Please let me know when you get a moment.

Thank you

Good morning Will,

Sending you a quick update on my project. My developer informed me yesterday that he'll have a functioning version next Tuesday, and it should be less than a week after that before it's finalized. Very excited.

Please let me know what else you need from me and I'll get it over.

Thanks!

Hey Will,

I wanted to check in to see what the next step is to close out this grant project. Is there a time we can hop on a short call to discuss or should we keep it to email.

Please let me know when you can.

Thank you

Hi @tywall86 -

There isn't anything else I need from you? Have you been paid in full? I would love to hear next steps, if you could send via email, that would be great.

Thanks will

tywall86 commented 2 years ago

Hey Will,

Yes! Thank you. Everything came in promptly.

Next steps are that another cohort member from the Web3 Startup Lab is potentially taking over the project to incorporate into his own (EasyLabs).

Please let me know if you need anything else!
